Dear New Yorkers,

Over 100 people in the New York City area were detained by federal authorities over the past week, new data obtained by THE CITY reveals, part of a broad, multi-agency sweep that has sent shockwaves across immigration communities nationwide.

While a handful of those arrests have made headlines, little is known about where many of those arrested are being detained. New York City-based immigration lawyers told THE CITY that they are struggling to locate many of them, and they fear the situation is only going to get worse as the Trump administration begins shipping people to far off sites.

Typically, people detained by ICE in New York City are sent to Orange County jail where about 70 ICE detainees have been held in recent months, to a larger processing center in Pennsylvania, or to a warehouse-like lockup in New Jersey.

The Trump administration has also begun sending what officials label as “high threat” migrants to Guantanamo Bay, and officials have also vowed to send detained migrants to mega jails in El Salvador, where thousands of Central American detainees are currently held with no access to outdoors, visitors, or any basic programs.

But even within the U.S., the dispersed locations have made it difficult for lawyers to contact their clients.

Thursday, Feb. 6: Watch a Zoom presentation by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) on the rights and protections for immigrants in New York City, led by the offices of a few city councilmembers. 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6: On the first Thursday of every month, DUMBO’s art galleries stay open late for gallery openings and performances. 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7: And on the first Friday of every month, you can visit the Bronx Museum after-hours. There’ll be DJ, beatbox, and spoken word performances — plus free empanadas. 6 p.m.

THE KICKER: This year is the 100th anniversary of the Schomburg Center, the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library dedicated to the preservation and study of Black history.
