Donald Trump did not arrive alone at the head of the United States. With
his election, a whole cohort of powerful industrialists and tech baronstook control of the world's leading power. A power that, driven by
capitalist appetites, poses an economic, ecological and geopolitical
threat to the entire world. ---- "During my first term, everyone fought
me. This time, everyone wants to be my friend," is what Donald Trump
declared at a press conference a few weeks after his election. While the
phrase surely refers to the overhaul of the Republican Party around his
person[1], he is probably also thinking of all the great fortunes that
rushed to his side after his victory. We have been able to follow his
rapprochement with Elon Musk, so at ease that he allowed himself a Nazi
salute during a speech on the sidelines of the inauguration. While he is
now the richest man in the world, he has taken such a position that one
might think that he was the one elected vice president.
And, after the election, others have lined up behind him. Starting with
Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos: the bosses of Meta (Facebook, Instagram)
and Amazon, who were hostile to Trump in the past[2].
They have recently increased their signs of allegiance, between public
statements, participation in gala dinners celebrating the Republican
victory, and donations of millions of dollars for the costs of the
inauguration. But Microsoft, Google, Uber and OpenAI are also among the
lot...
This is perhaps one of the remarkable facts of this election: almost all
the fortunes of Big Tech have rallied around Trump. Most of them had
until then adopted liberal strategies displaying an almost social
facade: green washing, pink washing, grand speeches on "inclusion", etc.
Many of these companies have made a 180-degree turn in recent months,
adopting much more authoritarian and libertarian positions. Perhaps they
felt the wind turn and saw the collapse of the Democratic Party coming
following its disastrous campaign?
"DRILL, BABY, DRILL"
If this is one of the explanations, we must surely look further. The
race for infinite growth in which these companies are engaged is
changing their priorities. In addition to the need to secure state
support in order to avoid any regulation of their activities, they are
also faced with the permanent increase in their needs for natural
resources and especially energy. So what could be better than a
carbon-fascist candidate[3]denying global warming? Among Trump's
campaign slogans repeated during his inauguration was "Drill, baby,
drill," in reference to fracking, an extremely polluting gas extraction
technique that Trump wants to rely on to ensure American energy autonomy.
These economic intentions are also found in the latest imperialist and
expansionist statements of the president. We would do well to refrain
from laughing at Trump's speeches when he says he wants to annex
Greenland or the Panama Canal. Because from an ultra-nationalist and
authoritarian point of view, this is a perfectly rational response to
this unlimited thirst of the capitalists. In a context of rising clashes
between imperialisms, we must also fear a runaway: if the United States
allows itself such a warlike approach, why should China curb its
ambitions on Taiwan, or Russia its invasion of Ukraine? N. Bartosek (UCL
