It's silly, but no one remembers the violence against a 21-year-old
student. He had filed a complaint on July 8, 2024, after being injuredby baton blows during a demonstration in Lille, the day before he filed
his complaint. The National Police Inspectorate (IGPN), following an
investigation forwarded to the Lille prosecutor's office, concluded that
"violence that did not appear to be part of a proportionate response."
The facts: During the announcement of the legislative election results,
which revealed the National Rally's victory, many people, called by the
New Popular Front, marched through the streets of Lille. Some
demonstrators shouted slogans hostile to the police, accompanied by
throwing bottles. "In the general confusion," according to the IGPN, the
anti-crime squad intervened. The victim received two baton blows. She
was taken to Lille hospital. Returning to her parents' home, suffering
from bladder pain, she was taken to Moulins hospital. The boy underwent
surgery, leaving him completely unable to work for thirty days. Doctors
also noted post-traumatic stress disorder related to the incident.
The IGPN analyzed the CCTV footage and determined that the student had
"definitely been the victim of violence." It noted his calm demeanor, no
object in his hands, and no threatening gestures. The national police
did not initiate an administrative investigation. The thirty officers
present were interviewed by the IGPN. None admitted to being the
perpetrator and were not even able to identify themselves in the
footage... And what about the justice system? On October 9, 2024, the
Lille prosecutor's office closed the case, due to the lack of identified
perpetrators. Following this, the prefect reiterated his support for the
police officers involved that evening. This lack of memory is silly, but
very practical.
