On Saturday, February 15, the FAI groups of Rome and Milan (together
with other anarchist and libertarian groups such as Fas and Usi-Cit)participated in an organized manner in the two marches called by the
Kurdish groups in support of the social revolution in Rojava. Below are
some reports and photos. ---- The web editorial team ---- Rome.
Defending Rojava. ---- Report of the demonstration of Saturday 15
February 2025 "Towards the solution: freedom for Ocalan" ---- February
15 is the anniversary of the arrest of A. Ocalan and, 26 years later,
this year too in Europe and in various parts of the world, there have
been mobilizations to demand his release together with thousands of
other political prisoners. In isolation on the island of Imrali, in
Turkey, he was the inspirer of Democratic Confederalism, a federalist
and confederate social structure, built and self-managed in northern
Syria called Rojava which has among its fundamental principles the
self-organization and self-defense of women.
In Rome, the path towards the demonstration began in October 2024 when,
with the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, the attack of the Turkish
state in that region intensified. In our city there was an intense and
participatory debate that led in December to a press conference, a
public meeting at Sapienza University "Syria, prevent the massacre of
civilians", a demonstration in Independence Square, near the Turkish
Embassy with the slogan "Defend Rojava". In coordination with all the
participating and collaborating solidarity organizations, then, in
January, we met at another rally in Piazza Campo dei Fiori, near the
French Embassy, for the anniversary of the assassination of three
activists by an infiltrator of the MIT (Turkish secret services) that
took place in the Kurdish Cultural Center of Paris in 2013. The journey
towards the day of February 15 continued with the public assembly on
January 26 at the Forte Prenestino Social Center on the occasion of the
tenth anniversary of the liberation of the city of Kobane from ISIS in 2015.
The call to demonstrate was entitled Towards the solution: freedom for
Ocalan and the march was called by Uiki (Information Office of Kurdistan
in Italy), Rete Kurdistan Italia and the Ararat Socio-cultural Center of
Rome. In continuity with the debate and coordination online, as Gruppo
Anarchico C. Cafiero FAI Roma, we shared the route with all the
participating entities in Rete Kurdistan Roma e Italia, Uiki
(Information Office of Kurdistan in Italy) and the Ararat Cultural
Center of Rome.
We met in Piazza Ugo La Malfa and the procession wound its way to the
Testaccio neighborhood to end at Campo Boario where the Ararat Cultural
Center is located. Many interventions at the microphone, in every square
we encountered we stopped and the reasons for this important
demonstration were explained. Delegations of committees and well-known
solidarity associations from other regions participated: Puglia, Sicily,
Calabria, Abruzzo, Molise, Sardinia, Marche, Tuscany, Umbria alongside
the Kurdish community present in our country.
Active in the debate and mobilizations we shared the red and black
banner DEFEND ROJAVA. One of our comrades spoke at the microphone in
Piazza Albania. For the occasion our group welcomed the Mapuche flag in
its section and distributed a flyer for the Campaign Where is Julia
Chunil? luchadora mapuche disappeared on November 8 in Chile.
Before going to the procession we displayed and photographed the banner
NO STATE NO NATION FEDERALISM REVOLUTION near the Anarchist Space 19
July in Garbatella among the popular lots near the small hotels. The
route to the demonstration has been enriched in recent weeks also by the
return of a delegation that went to Kobane for which a press conference
was organized. About a thousand demonstrators took part in the march in
Rome on Saturday 15 February and the speeches at the microphone also
included excerpts from texts brought to the meeting of the People's
Tribunal held in Brussels on 5 and 6 February.

Here is the press release for the Cafiero procession
------------------------------
On Saturday 15th February, as a Bakunin group of Rome & Lazio, we took
to the streets to express our solidarity with the people of Kurdistan,
remembering the importance of the revolution in Rojava and the model of
self-management inspired by the anarchist theses of Murray Bookchin.
With our banner "Neither God, nor State, nor war: free all in a free
Earth", anarchist and anti-authoritarian flags, we reiterated our
support for the fight against all forms of oppression, for gynaeology,
for ecofeminism and for the anti-capitalism expressed by democratic
confederalism.
The procession was colorful and varied, with a fair amount of
participation but with a strong presence of solidarity groups and
comrades who recognize in the Rojava experience a concrete alternative
to state and capitalist systems.
The square filled with music and speeches against war, patriarchy and
imperialism, reaffirming the need for collective and international
resistance.
Our presence has aroused interest and dialogue, with moments of
discussion on the possibilities of building self-management models also
in our territories.
We will continue to fight so that the revolution in Kurdistan is not
stifled and so that its principles can inspire paths of liberation
everywhere.
Anarchist Group "Bakunin"-FAI Rome and Lazio
Below is the Bakunin statement
For a world without borders or oppression
February 15, 2025 marks the 26th anniversary of the capture of Abdullah
Öcalan, a central figure in the Kurdish movement's struggle for rights
and self-determination. His solitary confinement on the prison island of
Imrali is not only an injustice to an individual, but also a symbol of
the systematic repression that the Kurdish people have suffered for
centuries.
In Turkey, the policy of forced assimilation and the denial of Kurdish
identity have led to a violent and ongoing repression. Warfare and
bombings in the southeast of the country and northern Syria aim to
stifle any form of Kurdish autonomy. Since 2016, the Turkish army has
conducted several ground operations in northern Syria with the aim of
weakening local Kurdish forces. In Syria, the recent fall of Bashar
al-Assad's regime and the rise to power of Islamist leader Ahmed
al-Shara have allowed Turkey to strengthen its influence in the region,
further complicating the situation for the Kurdish population.
Despite repression, in Rojava, in north-eastern Syria, a revolutionary
model based on Democratic Confederalism has emerged, inspired and
influenced by the thought of Murray Bookchin. This model promotes a
stateless society, based on self-government, social ecology and gender
equality. The Rojava revolution is a concrete example of how communities
can organize themselves autonomously, overcoming hierarchical and state
structures. The adoption of Democratic Confederalism has led to a
profound social transformation, with the creation of self-managed
communes, economic cooperatives and popular assemblies.
A central aspect of the Rojava revolution is the emancipation of women
through ecofeminism and gynaeology, with two central political
representatives, one male and one female, of equal importance, power and
social burden. In contrast to the patriarchal and theocratic cultures
prevalent in the region, women in Rojava actively participate at all
levels of decision-making, from local assemblies to self-defense forces.
This experience offers a model of freedom and equality that surpasses
even many Western societies, where patriarchy, nationalism, systemic
racism and religious interference in public structures persist.
It is important to remember that solidarity with the Kurdish people has
often encountered obstacles in the West as well. A case in point is the
case of Maria Edgarda Marcucci, who, after fighting against ISIS
alongside Kurdish forces, was deemed "socially dangerous" and placed
under special surveillance for two years. Meanwhile, Western governments
continue to maintain political and economic relations with authoritarian
regimes such as those in Turkey and Syria.
As an anarchist group Bakunin of Rome and Lazio, we recognize in the
Rojava model a living example of the principles of self-management,
mutualism and freedom that have always guided our struggles. Their
experience shows that it is possible to build a society free from the
chains of the State and capitalism, based on cooperation and mutual
respect. For these reasons, we join with conviction in the march in
solidarity with the people of Kurdistan, recognizing in their struggle
an integral part of our own struggle for the freedom and emancipation of
all oppressed peoples; we invite everyone to participate in the march on
February 15, 2025, to support the Kurdish people and to affirm together
the values of freedom, justice and self-determination.

MILAN
Yesterday, Saturday 15 February, several thousand people wanted to
reiterate their support for the ROJAVA REVOLUTION, for the liberation of
Ocalan and the defense of the conquests of DEMOCRATIC CONFEDERALISM. A
large RedBlack segment with all the anarchist and libertarian behaviors
of Milan were present at the demonstration. The demonstration passed in
front of the RAI building. The procession rightly made a splash in front
of what in everyone's eyes is now the "PUBLIC SERVICE OF REGIME AND
DISINFORMATION". A beautiful banner was placed in front of the entrance
to the RAI.
Then the procession continued its route and arrived at its destination,
that is, in front of the Turkish Consulate. Many interventions against
the fascist Erdogan, in solidarity with Ocalan, the Zionist massacres in
Gaza and for the Confederalism in the north of Syria and in the south of
Türkiye (Rojava and Bakur).
