"The divestments of public sports facilities are countless: Agorà Ice
Palace, the Lido swimming pool, the hippodrome, the Scarioni swimmingpool, the San Siro Stadium itself is up for sale in the projects. All
public facilities offered to private speculation, as in the case of
important swimming pool builders who have already set their sights on
transforming those divestments into privatization projects at the
expense of the most popular users in favor of an offer to the wealthier
classes". ---- This is what we wrote a few issues ago in this newspaper
on the occasion of the protest against the Winter Olympics scheduled for
2026 in the area between Cortina and Milan. The protest, called
Utopiadi, was realized with the occupation of the former Ice Palace,
still abandoned, revitalized for the occasion by a three-day practice of
popular sports organized by various grassroots associations, from boxing
to football, with related spaces for debates: an initiative in contrast
to the speculations carried out in the area as a consequence of the
Winter Olympics event.
In recent days the issue of the sell-off of the Meazza municipal stadium
in the San Siro area has returned to the fore. A project that the mayor
Sala wants to realize, the mayor "I'm selling everything". But the
curious thing is that, although there is a lot of talk about it, in
reality the City Council itself has never addressed the issue, so the
project would be carried out secretly from the institutions themselves.
The project would be this: the current Meazza stadium, renovated in the
80s, is a public structure owned by the municipality that makes
significant profits by representing an income. This structure should be
sold to the football clubs of Milan and Inter, who at the same time
would purchase, a few steps away, the Parco dei Capitani, a large green
lung useful for providing oxygen to the inhabitants of the area.
Therefore, the public Stadium of San Siro would be demolished and in the
immediate vicinity a new private Stadium would be built in the large
area of the Parco dei Capitani requisitioned for this purpose. But the
operation does not end here, because in the entire area of the Park,
close to the new Stadium, a series of shopping centers would be built. A
large speculative operation in favor of private individuals and to the
detriment of the public.
In recent days, the space inside the Park has been occupied by a company
equipped with drills and other machinery, with the specific purpose of
drilling and testing the ground. Nearby residents, who feel damaged by
similar interventions, have taken photos of this cumbersome presence and
sent around to raise the alarm. We immediately wondered who gave
permission to this company since the matter was never discussed at an
institutional level, which was confirmed to us by consulting some
Councilors of the same majority.
On the morning of January 28, the San Siro Città Pubblica Committee
mobilized, which in the pouring rain entered the Parco dei Capitani,
where the construction site had been improperly activated for a few
days. About twenty people were taking part in this protest initiative,
who entered the construction site and reported the irregularities.
Despite the Committee's request, no authorization to carry out the
interventions was shown, while the Committee itself contested the lack
of adequate signage for the work in progress. The protest was filmed by
a television crew and broadcast on the RAI 3 news. The purpose of the
incursion was to denounce this privatization and speculation project to
the detriment of the environment and greenery, with the cancellation of
a public park. The Committee is committed to continue the battle to stop
this further madness desired by Mayor Sala, unaware, as we repeat, of
the Milan City Council itself.
