Since October, negotiations interrupted in 2015 have resumed with the
aim of a peace agreement. The main protagonists are Abdullah Ocalan,imprisoned in isolation for 23 years on the island of Imrali, and the
government of Ankara. This negotiation would imply de facto freedom for
Ocalan and the other prisoners and is also supported by the DEM
Democratic Party of the Peoples, the third party in the parliament in
Turkey. ---- In the meantime, however, in the same month, with the fall
of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria by the Islamist group Hayat
Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Syrian National Army (SNA) attacked the cities
of Shebah, Tal Rifat, Sherawa and Manbij and Turkey intensified the war
against the north and east of Syria, causing the exodus of a large part
of the population of Manbij and Sheba. Those who remained suffered all
kinds of atrocities.
In a statement on December 20, 2024, the Women's Council stated that the
fall of the Assad regime is positive but the crimes in Idlib, Afrin,
Jarablus, al-Bab, Serekani and Gire Spi, the killings, kidnappings and
deprivation of fundamental rights have continued by armed groups
supported by Turkey who are continuing to commit crimes against women
and religious and ethnic minorities, especially Christians, Alawites and
Druze, in the coastal and southern regions.
The new administration installed in Damascus is collaborating with the
Turkish state therefore for total war.
In the regions of the Autonomous Administration, the SDF (Syrian
Democratic Forces) composed of young Kurds, Arabs, Armenians, Turkmen,
Syrians and Assyrians are protecting the population. In the middle of
winter, two hundred thousand people were displaced and forced to seek
refuge east of the Euphrates, and were given shelter in every possible
place, schools, public buildings and homes.
After two weeks of attacks on the Tishreen Dam and the Qereqozak Bridge,
while the SNA unsuccessfully attempted to cross the Euphrates River from
the Mambji countryside to the Kobane countryside, the SDF launched a
counteroffensive in December and retook several villages. On January 4,
the SDF Press Center stated that the ground and air attacks by the
Turkish state and its allied gangs against the east and south of Manbij,
the north of the Tishreen Dam and the Qereqozak Bridge were repelled.
On the tenth anniversary of the liberation of Kobane from the siege of
the Islamic State (ISIS), by the YPJ Women's Self-Defense Units and the
YPG People's Self-Defense Units on January 26, 2025, the city is once
again under attack and there are fears of an imminent invasion. So the
population has continued to mobilize since the beginning of December to
assist in any way they can. Hot meals are prepared daily in large
cauldrons for the fighters of the SDF and the YPJ (Women's Protection
Units). In particular, the members of the "Martyr Fîras Commune", which
brings together 25 families, also take care of the distribution. In
addition, many are arming themselves to participate directly in the
resistance.
The HPG (in Kurdish Hezen Parastina Gel) are not a state army, they come
from the communes and are all voluntary and unpaid forces; take part in
Tev-dem, the Movement of organizations that work for democratic autonomy
according to the principles of democratic confederalism theorized by
Öcalan. They deal with the self-defense of the neighborhood and are a
direct expression of the local commune. They arise from the communes,
organize themselves through them and defend them.
It should be remembered that in thirteen years in Rojava the Autonomous
Administration has been able to guarantee a free, self-managed and
self-defense space without a State.
