In March, we will undoubtedly have a great celebration: March 12th - The
Day of the Czech Republic's Accession to the North Atlantic Treaty(NATO) in 1999. Government politicians, capitalist media, and even some
leftists will promote and praise this war pact. We will certainly be
convinced of the necessity of increasing armament costs. They will use
the war in Ukraine to do so. How could we not, after all, we are
celebrating 27 years in NATO! We declare our anti-militaristic stance
today as well. We protest against NATO membership and demand immediate
withdrawal from this criminal and militaristic military pact. ----
President Havel was of the opinion at the time that declaring a
referendum on NATO accession was nonsense. According to him, this is a
treaty between states, so logically, workers have nothing to say about
it. In twelve days, disappointment turned into pure disgust when the
homes of ordinary workers in Serbia were covered in NATO bombs. The
decision-making processes within the alliance are similarly
"democratic". At the top of the pyramid stands the USA, defending the
interests of domestic and multinational capital.
NATO officially transformed into an offensive military pact in 1999,
when the original idea of "protecting territory" was changed to
"protecting interests". This has led to pressure to transform the armies
of member countries, whose specialization is no longer defense but
attack, opening up a huge market for arms corporations and room for
corruption. Arms corporations have become famous for obtaining contracts
through massive lobbying and bribery. The largest of them, Lockheed
Martin, has been responsible for corruption scandals in the past in the
USA, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia. In the
Czech Republic, bribery scandals accompany almost every tender of the
Ministry of Defense. Moreover, NATO membership obliges the government to
spend more than CZK 160 billion on armaments annually. In addition, the
new US President Donald Trump is pressuring NATO member countries to
spend up to 5% of their budget on armaments.
NATO is a nuclear alliance of the global ruling class, which is
responsible for countless deaths, illegal deadly airstrikes and wars
waged for the purpose of economic growth, obtaining new resources and
multiplying profits. Moreover, NATO, and especially the USA as the
leader of this military pact, through its expansion and geopolitical
games, is leading us more and more openly towards a planetary conflict
between the Western (USA and EU) and Eastern (Russia and China) blocs.
This clash resulted in a war in Ukraine, in the Middle East. Everything
indicates that capital is trying to unleash another round of wars.
In the wars unleashed by NATO, only death and capital win. As ordinary
people, we have no legal tools with which we could really influence the
decisions of politicians, let alone their armies. Therefore, it seems
obvious that NATO defends the interests of a handful of rich people from
the USA, Germany, France, Britain and other countries. Let us refuse to
pay for their war invasions, corruption and trade in death. Let us
reject the false game of democracy and develop an international anti-war
movement so that we can stop their war campaigns! Let us prepare the
ground for a social revolution that will create a world where there will
be no exploitation of man by man, where there will be no rulers and
ruled, no more wars!
