Let's hope that no one will think of reminding Trump that in Sicily
between 1944 and 1947 there were people who hoped for the annexation ofthe island to the United States, becoming the fifty-first star of their
flag. The talkative magnate president could fire off one of his own and
announce the taking possession of Sicily to make it the Resort of the
Mediterranean. ---- Trump could claim billions of dollars in credit for
the military protection that the Americans have generously offered in
about 70 years of occupation of sites such as Augusta, Sigonella,
Niscemi and other minor ones, figures that would justify the immediate
acquisition of ownership of the island.
The next announcement could be that of the transfer (deportation) of the
4 million Sicilians living in other sparsely populated Italian regions
such as Calabria, Sardinia, Abruzzo and Molise.
The Italian rulers, unable to speak because of their swollen and
reddened tongues from having kissed the ass of their American master and
his business partners so much, would remain silent and servile, indeed
they would make the civil and military logistical apparatus of the State
available to facilitate the exodus of the population. Salvini would
consider the bridge over the Strait even more urgent to accelerate the
Sicilian exodus. The opposition would cry "but... however... nevertheless".
So after Gaza, on another substantial slice of Mediterranean territory
the star-spangled flag would fly. Dystopia or reality around the corner?
