The central theme of Christian Astolfi's latest novel is the encounter
and friendship between two women, Rose-Marie and Farida. One, a16-year-old orphan, left her Corsican village with her husband and baby;
the other left Algeria to join her husband and children. Their chance
meeting in Toulon in 1957, near the shantytown where Farida lives,
allows us to revisit Rose's childhood, her withdrawn and silent family
life, and their journeys as uprooted women. Their friendship, literacy
and learning to read through popular education workshops, political
awareness, and then participation in anti-racist and anti-colonial
mobilizations against the Algerian War constitute an existential
upheaval for Rose-Marie.
The silences, filled with solitude in their respective lives, transform
into complicit silences when they meet again. Rose-Marie's isolation
will disappear at the gates of the slum. From a chance encounter, their
meetings will become vital for both of them, allowing them to escape,
just a little, the inevitability of their lives. Until the massacre of
Algerians on October 17, 1961, perpetrated by the Parisian police, which
will shatter their complicity. Rose-Marie will continue her commitment
to the Peace Movement as long as she can.
With this book, a testimony to a sisterhood that remains unspoken,
Christian Astolfi continues his humanist work that pays tribute to the
humble and the invisible. His previous novel, De notre mondeemporte
(From Our World Carried Away) (Le Bruit du Monde, 2022), recounted the
story of the La Seyne-sur-Mer shipyards (Var) and the breakdown of labor
relations following its closure, against a backdrop of disillusionment
linked to the rise of the left to power in the 1980s. Until the first
asbestos deaths sparked a revival of the collective and the struggle.
