UCL is committed to the "Disarm Bolloré" campaign, which reached its
second major milestone at the end of January. To make this campaignsustainable, it must be widely known and invested in. Launched in the
fall of 2024, "Disarm Bolloré" is a united campaign bringing together
political organizations, unions, associations, NGOs, and other
collectives [1]. Its aim is to expose, denounce, and combat the powerful
influence of Vincent Bolloré, France's eighth-richest man. He is known
in particular for owning the Vivendi and Universal groups, as well as
Socfin, which owns numerous rubber and palm oil plantations in Africa,
and Bolloré Transport & Logistics in the transportation and energy
sectors. This capitalist hydra is present throughout the world and acts
as one of the spearheads of neocolonialism and environmental destruction.
But why then target Bolloré specifically among all the major French
business leaders? He uses his wealth and networks to further an openly
far-right, reactionary, and ultra-Catholic political agenda. This is
particularly evident in the media he has controlled (CNews, JDD, etc.),
but also in his publishing and distribution companies (the Relay
network), and through his anti-union and racist practices across all his
companies. He therefore stands at the intersection of numerous forms of
domination. This is why he was chosen, not as a single target, but as a
priority symbol to be brought down.
How to get involved in the campaign
Faced with such a sprawling adversary, there are many ways to get
involved. The "Disarm Bolloré" campaign has already launched a
bookmarking campaign to insert into the books of Bolloré-owned
publishers to raise awareness of its omnipresence in the publishing and
media worlds. It is also possible to go further by boycotting their books.
More generally, a large number of visuals and educational resources are
available on the campaign website for wide distribution: both as part of
the decentralized action weeks (the first took place between January 29
and February 2), and beyond. This is also an opportunity to join the
campaign's member organizations to strengthen them!
Concrete Perspective: Carnival in Brittany
A highlight took place at the Pointe de Beg-Meil on Sunday, February 2.
In this area of South Finistère, consisting mainly of second homes, the
crowd gathered in front of Bolloré's second home in the heart of his
family's ter-ter for a fest diez, a popular "daytime festival" in
Brittany where traditional dances are performed to instrumental music,
which lasted all afternoon. This type of traditional festival, featuring
performances by bell ringers, kan ha diskan duos (singing and
counter-melody techniques), and other musical groups, is an opportunity
for participants to dance to keep warm and also to show another side of
Brittany. In contrast to the vision Bolloré seeks to promote of a
Brittany closed in on its past, we oppose it with an open Brittany, rich
in its diverse traditions that live on in our daily lives.
The symbolic action was also intended to denounce the billionaire's land
grab. We have already discussed Loc'h Island, which was once used for
sailing by resistance fighters and is now guarded by a former GUD
member. At Beg Meil [2], a crowd attempted to enter a hotel under
renovation recently bought by the tycoon. The police repelled the
"dangerous" crowd, disguised as birds and unicorns for the occasion, and
only a few graffiti artists remained from the event.
Dancing at the ends of the earth and fostering an anti-fascist popular
culture is certainly not enough to defeat fascism and the material
support it receives from the upper middle class. This type of event
cannot exist in isolation from a broader campaign, both geographically
and temporally.
