At a time when the government is passing new liberticidal laws that will
also target those who dare to protest in prison, we are publishing a
complaint regarding a situation of serious violence in a case of
political repression, in the face of which we believe it is important to
express solidarity, as well as against any abuse. ---- Last February 15,
after two years of being a fugitive, Salvatore Vespertino was arrested
in Madrid, sentenced in July 2023 by the Court of Cassation to eight
years for the crime of manufacturing, possession and carrying of an
explosive device. He had in fact been held responsible, together with
others, for an "attack" that took place on New Year's Eve 2017 at the Il
Bargello bookshop in Florence, a structure linked to the CasaPound
organization.
An absurd story, as unfortunately there are many: a package stuck in the
shutter of the bookstore, noticed several times without any alarm going
off, then kicked out by the police who arrived, handled carelessly by an
explosives disposal expert without safety equipment, an explosion that
ultimately injures the explosives disposal expert. A story that would
have deserved an investigation into the methods of the intervention and
that instead led, on the basis of evidence that was questionable to say
the least, to the conviction of Vespertino.
At the request of Vespertino's lawyer, Sauro Poli, in turn expressly
urged by Vespertino himself, we publish the following note:
Salvatore Vespertino, a 38-year-old anarchist, arrested in Spain on a
European arrest warrant for a residual sentence of 5 years and 6 months
as he was held responsible for injuring an explosives disposal expert on
New Year's Eve 2017, expressly asked me to make public the treatment he
suffered in Spain. Two days after his arrest, which took place in Madrid
on the night between 14 and 15 February 2025, he was beaten twice by a
fair number of guards, without any act of resistance on his part either
during the arrest or during the hearing to validate the arrest. To avoid
further beatings, Salvatore Vespertino resorted to self-harm, causing
wounds to both his forearms, in order to be transferred to the clinical
center. After his extradition, Salvatore Vespertino was initially held
in Rebibbia prison and is currently in the Spoleto prison, a prison
which also houses several dozen prisoners under the 41 bis regime. It is
Salvatore's desire to make what happened publicly known and to
contribute to increasing attention and awareness of the prison situation.
