If they didn't have some power, we would have limited ourselves to
mocking them. Instead, we have to take them a little seriously, becausethey showed their ferocious face and demonstrated that they still have a
partial hold on people. Above all, they promise to do it again. Who are
we talking about? But the organizers of the demonstration "A square for
Europe", which brought about 50 thousand people to Rome on March 15
(let's take them for granted, the figures provided are not very
convincing when you look at the images) to ask for a strong and leading
European Union ... ahahah, sorry, I can't help but laugh. Much has been
said about that square, so I would like to add a series of collateral
reflections. Those who contested the "square for Europe" spoke of
confused demands, where there was a bit of everything. I honestly don't
think it's the best criticism, especially from those who have experience
with marches: since when are our demonstrations a single body of similar
requests and truly shared platforms? Heterogeneity is a value, obviously
within a coherent framework. And in my opinion, the coherence of that
square was all there. It was the square of EU suprematism, in the sense
first of all of those who find themselves in a European Union of
whatever shape or color it is. The discriminant asked by those who
contested that square, that is, whether or not to join the rearmament
just launched by the Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen, was not
centered. Because the people who took to the streets instead joined a
model of a supranational institution to which they could delegate their
fate. Had the previous Commission issued the Green Deal to boast of
greater environmental attention? Ok, fine. The current Commission issued
the ReArm Eu plan, changing its name after a few days to Readiness 2030
(Readiness 2030, with the horizon of a war against Russia within five
years)? Ok, that's fine too. Whether it is welfare or warfare, bread or
soup, meat or fish, it makes no difference to these people, the goal is
to continue to mirror themselves in a self-fulfilling supremacy. By dint
of saying that we are the best, well, we will become. Or at least we
will end up really believing it. They are not even interested in
rebuilding Europe or the common sense of Europe, whatever that means and
if it ever existed, they only want to rely on an institution even more
distant than the nation states, even more evanescent so that they can
project their desires onto it. They say Europe and mean the European
Union, if they thought it necessary they would also wage war on
Switzerland and Norway, which are not part of the EU, and screw light
skin and Western culture. In the article launching the demonstration
Michele Serra started from his and his bubble's disorientation. In
short, they don't understand a damn thing: with Trump, the United States
has revealed its imperialism, and instead they would have preferred the
usual old ways in which imperialism is done but not spoken of, and on
the other hand China and Russia pursue their own national interests,
they are no longer subordinate and therefore scary. "What will happen to
Europe, which today appears to us as the classic earthenware vase
between two iron vases, full of atomic bombs to boot?" asks poor Serra,
funnier than when he directed the satirical weekly Cuore, designating a
Europe, that is, a European Union, which in his version is a sort of
little match girl surrounded by evil ogres. "Will the European way of
life survive this squeeze?" asks the former journalist at the height of
his concern, a harmless commentator for a long time who still has a
decent following due to his soft writing style and ability to caress the
aspirations of those who read him. The real question to ask is: how
subservient to the US do you have to be to talk about the European way
of life, using one of the most well-known Yankee expressions to
indicate, among other things, an absolutely impalpable lifestyle? What
is this way of life that will have to survive? The one that thrives on
social inequalities, that arrests those who protest, that allows a small
bourgeois minority to still exercise a presumed cultural hegemony that
in reality is a mere hegemony of power? While we give credence to those
who took to the streets for the European way of life, instead of
ridiculing them as they deserved, they took advantage of the opportunity
to count themselves, they say. And to do so they used the propaganda
means that are congenial to them: a couple of television networks (La7
and Nove) and a newspaper (Repubblica), the mayors of some
municipalities (like Gualtieri in Rome who thought it best to finance
the demonstration with the population's taxes): a constant and
exhausting hammering, worthy of any authoritarianism that they claim to
abhor so much. On the stage of the March 15 demonstration, a pitiful
parade of old white hetero cis males took place, each with middle
school-level arguments. There is no need to even go back to the list of
European intellectuals reeled off by Vecchioni or to the colonialist
oversights of Scurati, what remains is the restitution of a social body
that realizes that it is decomposing, despite the established
superiority, and screams to stop the decline. An obscene spectacle at a
time when these people still crave a slice of power, invoke overwhelming
institutions trying to give them a new virginity, ask to make war in
their place. Because ultimately the bullshit about "peace that has
softened us" and the invitations to go and fight are exclusively an
appeal to preserve their miserable and petty throne. We have known for
some time that people like Serra, Vecchioni and Scurati were not on our
side. But now they have made a leap in species: they have become class
enemies, enemies of the working classes, ready to sacrifice the poorest
and weakest people to wallow in the EU suprematism that they have always
fed on, and that they have finally revealed. We must take this into
account to adequately address this historical moment of preparation for war.
