"Among the deafening silence of the precariousness of a dystopian
metropolitan machine that feeds the greed of managers, politicians andentrepreneurs, the lone wolf howls fiercely as it plots among abandoned
brambles the incendiary resistance to the discipline of thought and
bodies." ---- Catania, 2015; a series of inhabitants of the city open
the doors of the former gym in Piazza Pietro Lupo. The public building
in question, abandoned for about twenty years, begins to assume a
significant social role in the Civita and San Berillo neighborhoods:
from a bourgeois and luxurious structure, once used for fencing, it
becomes "Urban Popular Laboratory" and, subsequently, "Occupied Urban
Popular Laboratory". Here people of all backgrounds, without
discrimination or social classification of any kind, can daily and
freely participate in the politics, management and activities of the
space. Over the years, many individuals have crossed and lived it in
search of a safe place and valid opportunities where they can actively
build and discuss with their imagination and knowledge, traveling and
experimenting together with new concepts, actions and arts. Outside the
places they commonly frequent (schools, universities, workplaces, etc.)
and regardless of their social roles, several individuals have been able
to implement their ideas, comparing themselves with each other. It is
precisely through affinities that relationships, dialogues, exchanges of
opinions, plural capacities are built, and unexpressed potential is
triggered.
In a showcase city that wants to ride European metropolitan models in
which everything is used for consumption and commodification, realities
like these allow us to experiment with experiences and practices of
self-management and horizontality, giving voice to the resistance of
individuals who suffer conditions of marginalization and fight for their
own emancipation. In the context of the practical concept of "reuse",
choices that belong to the anti-capitalist language and action are
expressed and paths are built that are distant from classist profit
logics that exploit territories and people's labor. In the free
laboratories - such as the screen printing one - for example, the "DIY"
method is applied (the "faidaté") that allows to recreate aspects of a
daily life now immersed under the principle of delegation, prey to the
welfare authoritarianism of brotherhoods and business associations.
In the Palestra Lupo, the deconstruction of the dominant culture is
possible and fundamental with new ways of conceiving reality and with
the assiduous search for one's own creative flow, through already
existing means and tools, for a spontaneous and genuine individual and
collective self-sufficiency. The escape in this way of the
expressiveness repressed by the alienation of roles, stuck in a
systematic and systemic "civil" society, breaks down every hierarchy and
mass routine imposed by the ideological spectre of Western globalist
multiculturalism.
Unfortunately, the economic interests of the Municipality of Catania and
some companies conflict with the activities that the militants carry out
inside that building, and on December 4, 2023 the City Council adopted a
new Integrated Urban Plan project to build a multi-storey car park
including a "technological garden". Thanks to the PNRR funds, the desire
of the business owners will finally come true. "Free Lupo Square" is the
slogan chosen for this urban design and to explicitly attack the
occupants of the L.u.p.o. The intention is clear: to repress alternative
subjectivities, non-conforming cultures and thoughts, "normativizing"
every behavior under the overbearing perspective of disciplining,
monitoring and reducing every individuality to a mere commodity.
In a society where the dichotomy between oppressed and oppressor
persists and where free-market economies create new classist and
hierarchical compartments, direct and active conflict is the obligatory
response to the institutions' claim to satisfy the needs and necessities
of each person in their own way. From 2015 to today, reflections and
acts of pure subversion have been imagined, created and experienced at
L.u.p.o., in which thought and action - conceived hand in hand - are
developed according to anti-authoritarian, shared visions that question
the knowledge, conventions and habits that state and commercial
institutions imprint unidirectionally, thanks to the possession of
telecommunication, education and cultural tools that commodify ideas,
manufacture consensus, with an illusory hedonistic entertainment, and
tame the creative uniqueness of each human being.
Stagnation must not be imposed on a reality in continuous
transformation: experimenting and building from the bottom up promotes
the liberation of expressiveness from coercion and increases the sense
of participation and sharing of one's existence with others and with the
nature that surrounds us; it helps to resist a police state that uses
its guards to dominate, annihilate and contain the "less well-off" in a
cage, be it prison, psychiatric hospital, therapeutic community or CPR;
it opposes the transformation of the city into a place of surveillance
and control, full of cameras and with narrow expensive housing, where
each neighborhood is scrupulously gentrified to allow a dull master
restructuring that will increase the cost of real estate and favor
speculation on basic necessities.
At L.u.p.o many people have managed to unleash their abilities and
various subjects, "crews", collectives, artists, emerging musical groups
have had a space in which to express themselves without prejudice. In
just a few years it has become the meeting place for underground
cultural scenes in Catania and Sicily: examples of this are the hardcore
and extreme music festivals - where bands like Storm{o}, Plakkaggio,
Hate & Merda have played - the tattoo circus and the numerous
presentations of "non-compliant" books and pamphlets.
A place of mutual aid, aggregation and counterculture, therefore, in
which the concept of private property has been abolished and an
abandoned building has been taken away from the interests of capital and
returned to those who no longer have spaces and moments of solidarity.
