WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL AL #359 - Antifascism - Argentina: The Birth of an LGBTI Counter-Offensive (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

During his speech in Davos last January 23rd, Milei had affirmed his

desire to attack the rights of women and LGBTI people and to repeal laws
protecting them in the name of equality. In response, an anti-racist and
anti-fascist demonstration on February 1st reignited the social
movement. ---- Since Milei's rise to power, attacks against the rights
of women and LGBTI people have been the norm. The objective is to
reverse recently won rights and the counter-powers guaranteeing them:
the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity was abolished in June 2024,
as well as Inadi (the National Institute against Discrimination), which
was merged into the Ministry of Justice. Support programs for victims
and those guaranteeing the right to abortion have been defunded, victims
of the austerity cure imposed on the entire country.

While the number of aggressions is increasing, the Argentine government
is accentuating them with its political violence by suppressing quotas
reserved for trans people, parity on electoral lists, and identity
documents affixing an X instead of the sex designation; a right won in 2021.

A convergence of anti-Milei struggles
Milei's discourse instrumentalizes the notion of "equality before the
law" and fuels the conspiracy theory that gender and sexual minorities
benefit from privileges. He thus announced his intention to remove
femicide from the law. Femicide has been inscribed in the Argentine
Penal Code since 2012 as a crime and is an aggravating factor in cases
of murder, punishable by life imprisonment[1].

Milei adopts a common rhetoric of the extreme right to wage a cultural
battle against the left: the woke plot and gender theory, linking LGBTI
rights to child abuse, even publicly stating during the World Economic
Forum that queers are pedophiles.

the message "Antirracista, antifascista siempre" ("Always anti-racist,
anti-fascist").

On January 25th, a General Assembly was held bringing together LGBTI
collectives in Lezema Park (park chosen during Milei's speech), and an
anti-fascist and anti-racist Pride was organized on February 1st in
Buenos Aires and in about twenty other cities, including European
ones[2]. It brought together more than two million people and gathered
numerous sectors such as retirees and a large part of the Argentine
political spectrum from the center to the far left under the slogans
"Basta Milei" ("Enough of Milei") and "Our lives are at stake, we will
not go back into the closet"[3].

By bringing with it a large part of society and no longer limiting
itself solely to the framework of militant organizations, this
demonstration gives new impetus to the Argentine social movement. If
this momentum continues, could it be the starting point of a serious
counter-offensive to Milei's policies, leading to victory?
