One Woman. 100 Dogs. We must help her keep them alive! |
|
|
The Woman Who Refuses to Look Away. Kolkata, India doesn’t hide its wounds. In the alleys you’ll find them — dogs with bones jutting through torn skin, their eyes sunken from hunger, their bodies trembling not just from pain but from years of neglect. These are not accidents. These are victims of abuse. Beaten. Burned. Thrown like trash. And if not for one woman, they would remain unseen, untreated, and unloved.
Her name is Susmita Mandal, and every step she takes is a stand against cruelty. |

Susmita has never turned away. Let’s show her we won’t either. |
|
Susmita walks the streets of Kolkata every single day, carrying food in one hand and medicine in the other. She doesn’t do it for money or applause. She does it because no one else will. Over 100 stray dogs depend on her to survive. Some have wounds so severe you cannot look without flinching. Dogs whose legs have been broken intentionally. Dogs who’ve been slashed, starved, set on fire.
And still, when Susmita calls, they come limping toward her with tails wagging faintly. They trust her because she is all they have. |

The Medicine Bank You Made Possible |
|
When Susmita told us her dream of creating a place where rescuers and poor pet owners could get emergency medicine for free, we knew we had to act. And thanks to your support, it’s no longer a dream. The Medicine Bank is open, stocked with painkillers, antibiotics, antiseptics, and more—essentials that can stop a dog from dying in agony on the roadside. Susmita now has a place to turn when a pup with maggot-filled wounds collapses at her feet.
But the shelves don’t restock themselves. Every month, we must raise at least $700 to keep this miracle alive. |

A Festival of Hope in a City of Hurt |
|
Late last year, Animals First Aid and Susmita hosted the Kolkata Stray Animal Awareness Festival. For a moment, the city paused. Children drew posters of the dogs they see every day. Volunteers handed out flyers explaining why it is never okay to hit, poison, or abandon a dog. And Susmita stood in front of a crowd and told them about Bhulu—the paralyzed puppy she pulled from a garbage pile who wagged his tail until his final breath.
This festival was not about celebration. It was a cry for help. It was a call to action in a city where too many still look away. |

A Future Hanging by a Thread |
|
Kolkata’s streets are filled with bones—some still inside the dogs, some already stripped by time. And the cruelty is not slowing down. Without Susmita, there is no one to dress these wounds. No one to whisper comfort into a mangled dog’s ear. No one to be there when their final breath is not taken alone. But if we stand with her, these animals still have a chance. |

This is not just a campaign. It is a rescue mission in real time. Susmita is out there right now, tending to a dog whose back was broken by a brick, feeding a puppy whose siblings were drowned in a drain. She cannot stop. But she cannot go on without you. Please, help us restock the Medicine Bank. Help us keep food in her bags. Help us make sure that Kolkata’s animals are not forgotten again. |
