On June 28, a major national demonstration was held in Luxembourg City,
called by the country's two main unions, the OGBL and the LCGB, under
the slogan "Against this government policy! For solidarity, democracy,
and social justice." Bringing together more than 25,000 people according
to the unions, a gathering not seen in the Grand Duchy since 2009, the
protesters marched in a joyful, festive, yet combative atmosphere from
the train station to the city center, where a vast square, packed with
people, hosted speeches by union leaders. ---- Following the
pro-employer attacks by Luxembourg's liberal-conservative government,
which have intensified in recent months, the country's two major unions
have joined forces in a common union front to significantly curb this
government policy of true social deconstruction, which is austere,
unfair, and disastrous: announcements of further deterioration of the
public and solidarity-based pension system, a direct challenge to the
foundations on which collective bargaining agreements are based, and
therefore to wages and working conditions in general, plans to extend
the maximum permitted working hours on Sundays, announcements of almost
total liberalization of opening hours in retail, general threats of
flexible working hours, systematic attempts to circumvent unions, and a
challenge to the right to demonstrate...
For the protesters and the unions, it is also a matter of defending
Luxembourg's famous social model, which the government and employers are
directly attacking. Based on social dialogue and negotiation between the
government, employers, and unions (the famous tripartite), this model,
which has proven itself over and over again, has guaranteed social peace
in the Grand Duchy for over 50 years.
This formidable show of strength by Luxembourg's unions clearly bore
fruit, since it was just after its conclusion that the Prime Minister
contacted them to resume discussions by convening a tripartite meeting,
which the OGBL and the LCGB attended... but on THEIR conditions.
