WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FDCA, Cantiere #36 - WITH GAZA IN OUR HEART, REFLECTIONS FROM A VOLUNTEER - Luce Stranieri (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Anger! Helplessness! These are the emotions we often feel when we bend

over backwards to see justice, truth, and freedom for the Palestinian
people established. In many international documents, Palestine appears
as the "Occupied Palestinian Territories"... Occupied by whom? They
always forget to say by Israel. It's perhaps implicit, but not saying it
makes us complicit in this occupation and makes us forget our
responsibilities. I was talking about anger. Anger over a massacre, or
rather a genocide, unrecognized by those who have always championed
rights and freedom. A policy that uses double standards to define
Russian aggression in Ukraine and Israeli aggression in Gaza, but
also-let's never forget-in the West Bank, which is in some ways more
invasive, and which is almost always silenced (it's the settlers... it's
the young Palestinians protesting... and other excuses) because it would
reveal the clear policy of settler colonialism and ethnic cleansing that
the Israelis have been clearly pursuing since 1948, but Zionism even
before that.
It must also be said that in both Gaza and the West Bank, it is
civilians who are being targeted, with a dramatic percentage of women
and children. In effect, they are attempting to attack the very future
of a people!
So what to do? It's difficult to answer. We have the power to protest,
to take to the streets (how many demonstrations we've held over the
years, but especially since October 7, 2023), always unheard;
Demonstrations that also enliven the entire Western world,
demonstrations often punished with numerous expulsion orders,
particularly in the United States. They're also trying in Italy, as
happened a few days ago in Milan.
And then there's international solidarity. Charity. Humanitarian
gestures? Sure, but it's more than that: it means helping Palestinians
survive, but above all, resist, telling them they are not alone in the
face of genocide, the unpunished monster. It's support/solidarity with a
people at risk of genocide due to hunger, thirst, lack of essential
services, electricity, water, fuel, medical care, and the right to
education. These are all actions practiced by Israel that reveal its
genocidal intent, as the International Court of Justice in The Hague
declared in January 2024.
Unheard even by the countries that not only founded it, but also
supported it.
Since 2008, I have been collaborating with the Gazzella ODV association
(formerly a non-profit organization), which since 2020 has promoted the
long-distance adoption of wounded children in Gaza (Israel's favorite
target!) and, since March 2024, has been able to send funds for hot
meals, water, bread, hygiene products, as well as shoes and essential
school supplies, distributed in various areas of central and southern
Gaza. Other organizations, like us, are involved in this aid, not only
in Italy but in many other countries around the world.

And it's not easy: international banks often block the transfer of
funds, complicit with Israel in their efforts to avoid financing
"terrorists." Just like Israel: when it bombs tent cities, hospitals,
and the few remaining buildings, they say they are Hamas shelters!
And the population continues to be exterminated. And there is still no
vision for the future other than cynical and apocalyptic descriptions.
Instead, the future must be sought in the Palestinian population's
ability to organize itself, not only to survive but to build a political
alternative to the current ruling class, immobile and silent... but also
in the population of Israel, starting with the refuseniks, who refuse
military service, or the reservists, whose ever-increasing numbers are
deciding to no longer participate in the genocide. Faint hopes? But are
there any others?
The possibility of BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) exists, and we
should all commit to this. It worked for South Africa, let's make it
work for Palestine, and let this too be added to other expressions of
solidarity and aid.
Gazzella is a non-profit organization that provides assistance, care,
and rehabilitation to Palestinian children injured by war weapons, runs
educational projects, and distributes basic necessities to the
population of Gaza.
