The idea of publishing this book on the Rennes funeral cooperative is
commendable. There is indeed a challenge in raising awareness of thistype of recent and rare structure, given that there are only about
fifteen in France: cooperatives which, by questioning what we do with
our dead, "seek to transform funeral professions and practices by
freeing them from the commercial logic." ---- This book, based on
observations and discussions with cooperative employees, introduces us
to the administrative intricacies, the various professions involved in
this field, and the cooperative's missions. By engaging with families
and loved ones, the cooperative offers a ceremony and rituals that
reflect the image of the deceased.
Bringing back the human element means caring for the dead as well as the
living, in an environment that is increasingly becoming a market, albeit
a highly regulated one. We are indeed in the presence of a business of
death and burial, with twelve business networks alone generating half of
the funeral sector's overall turnover (including two that alone
represent a third of this amount).
The cooperative's more than 500 members-compared to 16 at its launch in
2019-include families, employees, partners, and the founders. This book
can also be seen as a tribute to this project, without forgetting the
attention paid by the publishing house to making this small book a
beautiful object.
