"Those who give their all for our freedom deserve all of our respect,"
Julia Glöckner can be heard saying on the Veterans Day website. Exactly
what freedom she's talking about remains unclear. Perhaps she's talking
about the freedom to still not have enough money to live on despite
working three jobs. Rather unlikely for someone who earns EUR16,000 a
month. What respect she's talking about remains equally unclear. To
throw a spiteful "thank you" at people who were drafted into military
service, perhaps against their will, and then injured in action today is
very reminiscent of the "waves of applause" for medical personnel during
the coronavirus pandemic. Only this time, they truly destroyed their
health for the good of our society and weren't forced into it like pawns
on a chessboard by some armchair generals.
Those who babble about freedom and respect shouldn't stop just when
things start to get uncomfortable. Freedom and respect mean a good life
for everyone.
A life where there is free public transport and not tanks, a life where
no one is dependent on trucks carrying aid supplies, which are still
being shot at and bombed today, a life where birds fly and not rockets.
There are many people who fight for this world every day: indigenous
people, internationalists, trade unionists, comrades from all social
movements.
The Rheinmetall Disarmament Camp will take place with them in Cologne
from August 26-31.
There, as here, we say, "Let's smash militarization together and
disempower the warmongers!
No war between nations, no peace between classes."
