This is historic: the Paris Court of Appeal announced this Thursday,
July 17, the release of Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese communist
activist for the Palestinian cause, after 41 years behind bars. Although
eligible for release for 26 years, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah had his last
request for parole rejected on February 20, and again on June 19. After
decades of struggle and legal battles, he "is placed under parole as of
July 25, on the condition that he leave the national territory and not
appear there again." He will therefore be released from prison and
return to Lebanon in a few days.
After these numerous reversals by the courts, this decision should be
final: the Prosecutor's Office's only recourse would be an appeal to the
Court of Cassation, which would not have a suspensive effect in any
case. At 74 years old, and after spending more than half his life in
French prisons, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah is free! Once in Lebanon, he
will likely become a symbolic target for the Israeli government, but in
the words of his lawyer: "If the Israelis assassinate him in Beirut, as
they likely will, he will die a free man as a resistance fighter, as he
is regarded by the entire Lebanese people." Since his imprisonment, he
has never ceased to affirm his support for Palestine and the
emancipation of peoples.
This historic victory for our side proves one thing: only struggle pays
off! We therefore salute the tireless and uninterrupted work of the
Support Committee and the United Campaign for the Liberation of Georges
Ibrahim Abdallah, which made this release possible. But the fight
continues: for the release of all political prisoners, for an end to the
genocide in Gaza, and the total liberation of the Palestinian people
from the colonial yoke of the fascist Israeli state, against all forms
of imperialism!
