"Is it time for Tea? Oh no". The opposition to the new GMOs, the
so-called TEA, an acronym that stands for Assisted Evolution Techniques
(in English NBT-New Breeding Techniques or NGT-New Genetic Techniques)
starts in Parma. In the afternoon of Saturday 14 June, a national
demonstration was held, promoted by the movement "Cambiare il Campo"
which was joined by various associations and organizations from the
farming and environmental world. The procession passed in front of the
European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which is playing an important
role in the deregulation processes of the new GMOs. In fact, the first
experimentation in Italy of genetically modified tomatoes, according to
TEA technology, is planned in Parma.
The planting of the seedlings is taking place right now in a field of
the organic and experimental company Stuard. After a sit-in in front of
the farm gates, some public meetings open to citizens, the screening of
videos and the presentation of the procession, the demonstration
gathered the support of farming groups from all over Italy: from
Mondeggi Bene Comune to Urupia, from La Terra Trema to the Associazione
Decrescita, from the Biodistretto della Valle del Panaro e
dell'Appennino modenese to Genuino Clandestino, Greenpeace Italia and
Legambiente.
The demonstration, starting from the train station, followed the route
in the city center area making various stops, interventions and
theatrical performances, to then arrive in the evening at the Parco ex
Eridania. Where it concluded with moments of conviviality, food, music
and theatrical performances on the theme.
The demonstration wanted to express favor to agroecology, an ecological
system that values small producers and local economies, healthy and
natural food, respect for seeds for the land, self-management of
agricultural resources. An alternative, which already exists and is
practiced by many farmers throughout Italy, as well as by organizations
and associations, which represents a concrete model and the main road to
remove agriculture from the capitalist logic of maximum profit, an
unsustainable model, with enormous environmental and social impacts.
From this perspective, the protection of soil and water as essential
goods is fundamental.
As fundamental is the creation of solidarity networks, largely already
existing, to counter the new GMO experiments that have little to do with
agriculture and a lot to do with industry and chemistry. The new fight
against GMOs that, compared to those of 20 years ago, again only have
names, starts and restarts from Parma. Hoping that it can be the first
step in a long path of claims and action on the issue of new experiments
and against the deregulation of genetically modified foods. At European
level, with the Commission and the Council continuing to push in this
direction, the risk is that we will arrive at the non-classification of
TEA products as GMOs. A hypothesis that would have as a consequence the
removal of traceability and labeling, instead foreseen for genetically
modified organisms.
"Let's say yes to promoting the natural regeneration of biodiversity -
we read in the text of the appeal for the demonstration of June 14 - to
the conservation of soil and water, true riches of communities and
effective defenses against adversity. Yes to the fundamental right of
farmers to conserve, reproduce, participatory selection and freely
exchange their own seeds. Let's say yes to food self-determination, to
the construction of small-scale networks based on relationships of
solidarity and mutualism, in support of peasant agriculture, with the
work of the land in collective self-management, not slave to the laws of
the market. Let's support peasant realities, preserving them from
disappearing and encouraging the return to the land for agroecology in
opposition to the multinationals of agriculture and industrial food".
