WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FAI, Umanita Nova #20-25 - Anarchism. A global and Italian history (1945-2025). On the 80th anniversary of the Italian Anarchist Federation. (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Study conference in memory of Italino Rossi - Carrara 11-12 October 2025

---- In the name of Bakunin, Malatesta, Berneri, but also Gino Lucetti
and anti-fascism... ---- The FAI, a structured, federalist, self-managed
organization, was born as the heir of the UAI (Italian Anarchist Union
of 1919-20) and of various associative experiences of anti-fascist
exile, the war in Spain, confinement and the armed Resistance. It was
established in September 1945 in Carrara where it celebrated its first
national congress with the participation of numerous delegates from all
over Italy. In the meantime, «Umanità Nova» was re-released as a weekly
- a periodical that is still published today - a glorious daily
newspaper silenced by the fascists. The climate of the "nascent state"
was euphoric and raised great hopes. The salient points of the
libertarian political struggle then concerned the problems of
reconstruction, trade union action and the organization of the movement.
Specifically, on reconstruction, the following objectives were
indicated: neutrality of Italy and refusal of military spending;
equality for women; direct action against landowners; study for the
application of new collectively managed production systems; financing
for building reconstruction managed locally; free and free school. For
the movement, however, it was a traumatic transition from the mass
protagonism of the pre-fascist period to a new national and global
scenario: the advent of democracy and the republic in Italy, and the
Cold War unfolding across the continents that required libertarians to
have a renewed anti-totalitarian as well as anti-capitalist and
anti-militarist commitment.

Today, 80 years later, a group of scholars, with the support of highly
specialized archives and study centers, is promoting a two-day
scientific conference in order to highlight, in the long time span that
has passed, elements of continuity and "rupture", periodizations and
militant, "cultural" and generational paths, of an anarchism that, from
the immediate post-war period, has crossed - contaminating itself and
contaminating the movements - the late twentieth century and now the
first quarter of the current century. The views that are proposed are at
the same time "Italian" and global, territorial and "from below". The
approach will be multidisciplinary and transnational, privileging
relational networks, life stories and biographies of militants,
identifying the connections between anarchism and contemporary radical
thought.

The conference is divided into four thematic sessions: Transnational
geographies of Italian anarchism; Anarchists and political parties in
republican Italy (1946-1977); Anarchism and new movements
(anarcha-feminism, anti-speciesism, Lgbtqia+, ...); Anarchism, unions
and social conflicts.

The days are dedicated to the memory of Italino Rossi (1940-2024),
scholar and militant of the Italian Anarchist Federation.
