Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

When the Trump administration dramatically ramped up arrests of immigrants across the country this late spring — targeting workplaces and public parks, for example — mass protests greeted their raids. In Los Angeles, Trump deployed the National Guard and Marines to assist ICE agents in response.

But the nature of ICE arrests in New York City has been different.

Between May 26 and June 8, an analysis by THE CITY shows, federal officers arrested 134 people in Lower Manhattan immigration courthouse buildings, accounting for nearly a third of all immigration arrests in New York City in that period. Overall, immigration courthouse arrests have been nearly 14 times as common in New York City than the country as a whole.

The large number of arrests behind closed doors has spared Mayor Eric Adams the spectacle of roundups on city streets and clashes with protesters. He has pledged to cooperate with the administration on some aspects of immigration enforcement, and his federal corruption case was dismissed earlier this year at Trump’s urging.
