WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, FAY, Umanita Nova: A memory of Gloria Tranquillini, partisan (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We have received and are pleased to publish a memory of Gloria

Tranquillini, who passed away on August 14th. ---- Gloria Tranquillini
has passed away, and with her, one of the last voices of the Resistance
has faded, a ringing, young voice that still speaks to us. She reminds
us that freedom is never guaranteed and that each of us faces a choice:
accept injustice or confront it. Gloria, born in Verbania in 1929, did
not spend her youth waiting for someone to restore her freedom, but
decided to risk it daily to conquer, build, and defend it through direct
action and rebellion against all unjust authority. Her family was
anti-fascist: her father Claudio was a member of the local CLN, and
their home in Biganzolo (on the Verbano hills) was a base for the Cesare
Battisti Brigade, commanded by Armando Calzavara "Arca." Gloria and her
sister Mirella, a year older than her, served as couriers, transporting
letters and documents from the mountains to the city center and back, on
the road from their home to the Pallanza high school. On April 18, 1945,
on their way home from school, Gloria and her friend Fulvia Lapidari
were stopped near the Plusc bridge: their bags contained documents
clearly referring to the partisan struggle. The students, arrested, were
taken to the Intra Hotel, headquarters of the Ravenna Black Brigade,
where they underwent a rigorous and grueling interrogation by the
fascists. Gloria managed to exonerate Fulvia by convincing the
militiamen that she had hidden the documents in her friend's bag without
her knowledge. Thus, her friend was released. After hours of questioning
alternating with threats, during which Gloria's only fear was that she
would betray herself, give in, and cause trouble for the partisans, she
was transferred to the Intra prison. On the evening of the 19th,
partisans Bandiera and Koki, along with Commander Arca, blew up the
prison gate and forced the jailer to open it. Meanwhile, other Battisti
comrades engaged in shootings at several checkpoints, distracting the
militiamen while Gloria escaped on her motorbike with Arca. Six years
after the Liberation, in 1951, Armando and Gloria would become husband
and wife. Today, on the day of her death, I want to remember her as the
young courier who, along with messages and documents, carried a vision
of humanity as new and vibrant as her youth. She carried the idea of a
society made up of equals and no longer subjects, for which anyone is
capable of raising their head and fighting, even a fifteen-year-old. Her
voice, still alive among us, calls us and reminds us that, even today,
in the face of the brutality and injustice of a regime, in the throes of
the struggle for a more equal society, we have a duty to stand up.
Gloria is not just a silent icon of the past; she is a call to resist
and always act, without turning a blind eye. Her courage and dedication
to the cause of Liberation are a legacy that calls us to commitment,
that urges us to pursue the world the partisans dreamed of and which,
sadly, does not yet exist.
