On April 28, the Urban Quilombos Fight for Decent Housing Movement was
publicly launched in Rio de Janeiro at an event held at the Marielle
Franco occupation in the Catete neighborhood. The event was attended by
other grassroots movements and organizations, including the United
Street Vendors Movement (MUCA), the National Network of Popular Lawyers
(RENAP), and the Land and Housing Unit of the Rio de Janeiro Public
Defender's Office (NUTH), who spoke about the struggle for housing in
the city. The launch also featured performances by artists such as the
refugee band Terremoto Clandestino (composed of immigrants and refugees
from different countries) and the rap group Us Neguin Q Não C Kala. The
movement currently has five urban occupations (Luiz Carlos Prestes,
Maria Felipa, Marielle Franco, João Cândido, and Tiradentes) and is
organized through assemblies, a general coordination, and various
committees and working groups.
The movement is made up of workers who fight for decent housing and
organize through direct action, self-organization, solidarity, and
internal democracy.
The Libertarian Socialist Organization (OSL) wishes long life to the
Urban Quilombos, until land and housing are a right for all workers
worldwide!
