Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba are waking up differently! Since
Tuesday, the 16th, construction workers have been on strike, refusing
the employer's handout of a 5.5% salary increase and the shameful R$10
increase in the basic food basket (food voucher) offered by the
employers, which currently costs R$120. The workers are demanding an
increase to R$275. The latest IBGE data indicate that the cost of a
basic food basket in Belém is around R$687.30. Faced with this
devaluation of labor and the need to ensure better living conditions,
hundreds of workers gathered on Monday decided to strike!
While hundreds of millions of reais are being poured into preparing for
COP30, in addition to R$30 million from the state government to set up a
stage for a concert at Furo do Combu (which the public could only see on
TV), the construction workers, those who really build the city, are
struggling to survive on starvation wages.
This strike is more than a fight for a pay raise and a basic food
basket: it's a denunciation of the system that enriches businesspeople,
politicians, and bankers at the expense of our sweat-and, often, at the
expense of our health and lives. Without construction workers, there is
no city, no profit, no COP30.
We at OSL extend our solidarity and support to the struggle being waged
by construction workers in Belém and the metropolitan region! Supporting
the strike means breaking the isolation, showing that we stand together
for a living wage, fair working hours, job security, housing for all,
and that a life without bosses is possible!
