Today's SCOOP is brought to you by our members.

Dear New Yorkers,

With less than a week before early voting starts, Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani is still hemming and hawing on how he’ll vote on three ballot measures that would fast-track affordable housing.

Like all New Yorkers, Mamdani will encounter a straight-up yes-or-no vote on the measures. But he’s in the unusual position of casting a ballot that will help determine how much power he himself would have — if he’s elected mayor — to enact his ambitious housing agenda.

The ballot proposals were crafted by his erstwhile rival, Mayor Eric Adams, and are supported, apparently, by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But the initiatives are bitterly opposed by City Council leadership, as well as by two powerful unions, 32BJ and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, that have endorsed Mamdani in the general election.

Read more about why Mamdani’s still undecided.

Our Other Top Stories

  • In ‘No Kings’ protests across the five boroughs, more than 100,000 New Yorkers turned out to rebuke the Trump administration’s policies. The marches were peaceful, with no arrests, but with plenty of colorful, NYC-centric signs that you can check out here.
  • A dozen federal agents arrested several people outside the Row Hotel Thursday afternoon. It’s the first time under the current administration that federal law enforcement has targeted migrants in such close proximity to a shelter. Later, in a bizarre twist, many of those detained were released after being interrogated at a nearby parking garage.
  • Iconic illustrator Drew Friedman joins the Lit NYC podcast to talk through what he wants to draw now that he no longer needs to take assignments, how New York City shaped his work, why he thinks being called "the Vermeer of the Borscht Belt" is a misnomer.
