"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against
oblivion" ---- And that is exactly what we must do: to safeguard the
historical memory of the Polytechnic uprising, to preserve it from the
efforts of power to erase it or distort its meaning, that is, to pass
its real meaning into oblivion. To safeguard the memory that the
collective struggles of the oppressed can bring results. That these
struggles were/are not only against the junta, but also against
capitalism and the power that, the day after the fall of the junta,
continued to oppress and exploit the many. That the Polytechnic should
not be an anniversary of national reconciliation. That from within the
occupied Polytechnic the slogan "Down with the power" was thundered for
the first time, as the global movements of the 1960s were arriving
somewhat late in Greece - a slogan that thousands of activists are still
shouting to this day, as we see our lives constantly degrading, within
their supposed "democracy".
At the same time, the political and social conditions that led to the
uprising have unfortunately not changed much over 50 years later, while
new reasons are added daily. Bourgeois liberal democracy very easily
turns into an authoritarian regime whenever it becomes necessary to
safeguard the profits of capital. They no longer need tanks to achieve
the goal. Any democratic pretenses are collapsing daily with the rise of
far-right and fascist parties worldwide as they have already seized
power in several countries on the planet or with the integration of the
far-right agenda across the political spectrum (inhumane treatment of
immigrants, social cannibalism, misogyny, etc.).
Capitalist barbarity is present then and now. Poverty, industrial
accidents, employer terrorism, anti-labor laws that allow up to 13 hours
of work, punctuality, exorbitant rents, destruction of public health,
destruction of the environment for the profits of the few, war on half
the planet and war preparations on the other half, theft of the wealth
of poor countries by the countries of the "West" and massacres or even
genocides by the same (Israel) or their representatives (Sudan).
As structural crises continue, war preparations for even wider conflicts
are intensifying as the only way out. Capital and governments in their
effort to maintain profits and power will not hesitate to turn members
of the working class to fight each other under the pretext of nation or
religion.
Against all this, we propose the collective organization of our class
with horizontal and direct democratic operation and militancy, so that
we can all fight together for the improvement of our living conditions,
which is necessary if we do not want to die as slaves. But always with
an eye on the future and with the ultimate goal of the total
transformation of society with the overthrow of capitalism and the
state. To create a society based on libertarian communism where
equality, freedom and solidarity are the main characteristics of the new
social organization.
