Last October 25, a segment of the Neapolitan population, along with many
men and women, demonstrated in front of the Mostra d'Oltremare on VialeKennedy in Naples, where the Pharmaexpo was being held. The Israeli
multinational TEVA, a financier of the genocide and therefore also
co-responsible for the massacre of 200,000 Palestinians, was also
participating. To denounce all this, they demonstrated with
determination and anger.
This desire for brotherhood, solidarity, and love for those killed by
power and domination, as is happening in Palestine, is not and has not
been liked by our masters; and so they unleashed their violence against
the protesters, carrying out a veritable Chilean-style ambush (beatings,
beatings, identification with mug shots and confiscation of documents),
brutally arresting some of them and placing five in custody. All this
was happening outside the building where the normal protest had taken
place, and people were peacefully flowing toward the exit. Forced to the
police station, two of the protesters were shortly released, while the
other three were immediately arrested and transferred to prison.
The response from comrades, supporters, and the entire movement was
equally immediate, strong, and determined, with a mass demonstration
outside the police station.
We immediately organized to denounce the incident, launching a
counter-information and mobilization campaign across the country. The
day after the arrests, a press conference was held at the same location
where the protest against the multinational TEVA had taken place the day
before, and where state repression had arrested *comrades*. The press
conference was well attended, with many speeches that, with the utmost
determination and clarity, called into question the person most
responsible for the presence of the Israeli multinational TEVA and,
therefore, for the arrests that followed the inevitable protests. In
July, the city council approved a motion that, as stated on the Naples
city council website, "commits the Mayor and the Administration to sever
ties with entities and institutions linked to the Israeli government and
to favor collaborative relationships with Israeli pacifist NGOs." These
statements were not supported by the facts, given the pompous presence
of TEVA in a public municipal space, clearly demonstrating the
deceitfulness of the mayor and his entire administration. The various
interventions at the press conference also highlighted the strategic
role, and therefore the condemnation, of the various repressive
legislative decrees that allowed this type of repression and arrests,
implemented by this unmasked fascist government and by previous fascist
governments wearing masks-most notably the Draghi government.
The press conference also decided on the initiatives to be undertaken to
free the arrested comrades. Among these was the organization of a large
citizens' assembly, which actually took place at the Faculty of Letters
and Philosophy, with a turnout that recalled the fateful moments of the
legendary 1968 assembly. A participation in which the presence of young
and very young students was not only the majority, but also decisive in
giving strength and perspective to the struggle for the liberation of
the comrades, the struggle against war, against all genocide, against
all forms of repression, and for the freedom of the Palestinian
proletariat. Together, they decided on an important next step, to be
realized in a citizens' demonstration.
Meanwhile, the machinery of power exhausted its first, most reactionary
and repressive phase, and thanks to the great mobilization and the
struggle of the antagonistic movement, it released three of our
comrades, while continuing to exercise repression through the
enforcement of the obligation to sign in three times a week.
The only appropriate response to the comrades' lack of complete freedom
was to implement the citizen demonstration decided upon at the assembly.
This took place on October 31st in a massive and angry manner, under the
massive and hateful presence of the police, the true armed wing of the
state. A few hours before the demonstration, we organized ourselves-just
as the entire struggle was organized-and we took our anger right into
the City Council chamber, occupying it, to try to enforce the council's
commitments.
The demonstration represented not a point of arrival, but a great moment
to continue the struggle and to reaffirm the awareness that only by
rejecting the logic of power, domination, and capitalism as a whole will
we stop wars, genocides, exploitation, patriarchy, and all the decrees
enacting repressive laws. And we can transform repression into strength.
