WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, Monde Libertaire - Against the Nuclear Lobby's Steamroller (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

As on every second Friday of the month, the Ile-de-France Anti-Nuclear

Coordination is organizing a film screening preceded by a buffet and
followed by a discussion. We invite you to join us to share our
knowledge and reflect together on ways to fight against the nuclear
lobby's steamroller. ---- Friday, December 12, EDMP room, 7 p.m., 8
Impasse Crozatier, 75012 Paris. ---- "Nuclear Power: How It Will Ruin
France," 2025 | 58 min. A film by Laure Noualhat, journalist and
director, who will be present. ---- While budgets for energy
conservation are melting away, funding for building nuclear power plants
knows no bounds. At Reporterre, we wondered what consequences this
choice will have on the price of electricity and the country's economy.

In a patient and meticulous investigation, we discovered that the
nuclear sector is not subject to any of the economic rules that prevail
in other industrial sectors. The nuclear option is endorsed by the vast
majority of the political class, whatever the cost. And the end consumer
will have to silently bear the brunt of rising electricity prices and
budget deficits. This dangerous paradox is what we describe in this
documentary, available online for free on our YouTube channel.

None of this is subject to democratic debate.

Journalist Laure Noualhat, along with documentary filmmaker Clarisse
Feletin, describes step by step how nuclear policy will weaken the
country by increasing its debt and closing off alternatives. At the
heart of this maelstrom is EDF, a state-owned company. It is indebted to
the tune of over 55 billion euros. It must ensure the operation of
reactors that are far exceeding their planned lifespan. It must prepare
for the decommissioning of aging power plants. It will have to pay to
store ultimate waste at great depths.

And as if that weren't enough to create deficits, EDF wants to finance
EPR2 reactors that it doesn't know how to build and whose cost already
exceeds the initial estimate. In total, hundreds of billions of euros
will be needed, but none of this is being debated democratically. And
the State-that is to say, us, the taxpayers and consumers-is supposed to
cover all the costs.

The issue, this investigation demonstrates, is that this uncontrolled
spending is affecting a country already heavily indebted and preventing
the most cost-effective energy policy, focused on controlling energy
consumption and developing solar and wind power.

The stakes for the country are so high, and the silence so deafening,
that Reporterre, an independent media outlet that depends solely on its
readers, has chosen to produce this film and accompany it with a book in
our collection at Seuil. What we do, the billionaire-owned networks
don't do and can't do. This film is the fruit of independence.
