WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, #WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - UCL Press Release - Rojava Facing a General Attack: Let's Mobilize to Support the Revolution (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The autonomous administration of northeastern Syria in Rojava is facing an existential threat. At the time of this press release, it occupies only the cantons of Kobani and Hasskyi, which are themselves under siege. The territories liberated from ISIS by the Syrian Democratic Forces are once again under the control of jihadist militias affiliated with the Syrian government.

For 13 years, the autonomous administration of northeastern Syria has built a true democracy of the people by opposing the ethnic division imposed by the regime of Bashar al-Assad. This revolution is also, and above all, a revolution of women: their self-organization and self-defense have brought about profound changes in the societies of northeastern Syria.

This revolutionary experience has been the target of a low-intensity war waged for several years by the Turkish state, determined to destroy Kurdish autonomy and the national liberation struggle. Despite drone assassinations of leaders and activists, the destruction of vital infrastructure, and the harassment of the population by the pro-Turkish militias of the Syrian National Army (SNA), the revolution has continued. Prepared to do anything to control Syria and destroy this political project that directly threatens his own imperialist ambitions, Erdogan has not hesitated to support Syrian jihadist groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS succeeded in seizing power in December 2024, overthrowing dictator Bashar al-Assad. It formed a government headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani when he was the leader of the al-Nusra Front in Syria, affiliated with al-Qaeda.

Today, the revolution is more endangered than ever because of the government formed by HTS. Attempts at negotiation between the Autonomous Administration and this new government have failed. Why? The first reason is simple. The new government's political project is the exact opposite of the Autonomous Administration's federalist model; it seeks a return to an Arab state centralized by Damascus and governed by reactionary laws. The second reason lies in the very origin of this government. It owes everything to Turkey, which protected, trained, and equipped it, and continues to support it today. Erdogan wants nothing more than to get rid of the Autonomous Administration. Meanwhile, the United States is also working to control the Middle East by dividing it between its allies: Turkey and Israel, and by ensuring a stable country with which to "do business." In December, Al-Sharaa chose to sign an agreement making very broad concessions to Israel, thus clearly delineating the spheres of influence of the two regional imperialist powers in Syria. The south for Israel and the north for Turkey. Equipped, trained, and informed, with Turkish air support and US approval, the Syrian government launched an attack, first against the autonomous neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah in Aleppo, and then against the entire administration building.

The Al-Shara government is manipulating information by portraying the democratic forces as the aggressors. It is up to internationalist activists to set the record straight. The Syrian Democratic Forces have repeatedly agreed to ceasefire agreements, but none have been respected. Similarly, Al-Shara presents its government as a stabilizing force by retaking ISIS camps in northeastern Syria, while the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) allegedly allowed prisoners to escape. On the contrary, the SDF defended these camps from jihadist militias allied with the government, thus endangering itself.

American imperialism, which seeks to reshape the world at the expense of its people, is not alone in its actions. European governments also support the reactionary and authoritarian Syrian regime. There are two reasons for this: to do business with a country possessing a stable (i.e., centralized) regime, and to expel Syrian refugees in Europe as quickly as possible. The European Union has thus injected over EUR600 million even as the new Syrian state and its militias were perpetrating mass femicides and ethnic cleansing against the Druze, Alawites, and Kurds in Aleppo. As we have seen in Palestine, the Middle East is a playground for Western powers acting in their own self-interest. Only popular pressure, as seen in 2019, will be able to break the complicity that enables this war and these massacres. In these troubled times, the Kurdish people are once again giving us a lesson in courage through their mobilization.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has called for general mobilization. The population is determined to resist, and Kurds are gathering at the borders of Rojava and in Bakur (Turkish Kurdistan), where the Turkish army is firing live ammunition to prevent thousands of people from crossing the border to support their brothers and sisters in Rojava. At this decisive moment, international mobilization is crucial. It is up to us to act and demand justice and reparations for all the crimes committed by Erdogan's Turkish state and the Syrian government. For the right to self-government and self-defense for the people and women of Syria! In France, let's fight to ensure that arms companies like Thales stop supplying weapons to Turkey, the second largest military force after the US in northern Syria. We call for mobilization everywhere to ensure the triumph of the revolution of the people and women in Syria and Kurdistan!
