WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York City NYC - THE CITY SCOOP - Housing boss joins rental hunt
[thecity.nyc/home]
Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026
Dear New Yorkers,
One Sunday last month, Dina Levy stood with Mayor Zohran Mamdani in The Bronx, where he announced she would be the commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
Levy has spent most of her career working in housing policy in New York, but she’s lived in Jersey City for 20 years. And city agency commissioners are required to reside in the five boroughs.
So, she started the hunt. Here’s what she found — and what it means that she’ll be the first housing commissioner who’s also a renter in at least a decade.
Weather 🌤️
Mostly sunny but windy with a high near 40.
MTA 🚇
In Brooklyn, no Manhattan-bound J trains between Chauncey Street and Kosciuszko Street. Find all the MTA’s planned changes and the latest delays here.
Alternate side parking 🚙
It’s suspended today, Feb. 11 due to snow.
By the way…
The Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants has released sign-ups for “Rental Ripoff Hearings,” where tenants across the boroughs can give testimonies to city officials about their housing experiences.

NewYork-Presbyterian and the New York State Nurses Association reached a tentative agreement on raises, staffing and on-the-job safety to end its strike, the union announced late Tuesday night. The tentative deal at NYP will likely put an end to the work stoppage that involved 15,000 people.
A grim statistic that keeps growing: The city has now said 22 people have now likely died from cold during the recent severe weather, including seven previously unknown deaths of people found in private residences who died from hypothermia.
As the cold weather continues, Mamdani is rescinding a new rule set in motion by his predecessor that would have made it harder for people to get off the streets and into shelters. THE CITY first reported on the rule change last week.
Later this morning, the mayor will begin his first so-called “Tin Cup Day,” the annual ritual where the city’s leader asks for financial support from legislators — and has to answer their many questions about the city’s fiscal health.

In 2025, Uber riders took nearly 180 million trips in New York City. More than just a ride, Uber has become a reliable lifeline for New Yorkers and visitors, providing essential access to critical services like doctor’s visits and bridging the gap in outer-borough transit deserts.
Over the course of last year, Uber drivers completed almost 180,000 Access-A-Ride trips, and close to 500,000 trips in Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles, while the average wait time in the outer boroughs was about three and a half minutes.
Former Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado dropped his primary bid to unseat Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday, just a week after announcing his running mate.
Delgado, who launched his campaign in June, said in a statement that "there simply is no viable path forward." Last week, he announced as his running mate India Walton, who won a primary to be Buffalo's mayor in 2021 before losing in the general election.
"To those who have supported this effort, especially my incredible campaign team and volunteers, I can't begin to express my gratitude for each and every one of you," Delgado said.
Also last week, Mamdani endorsed the incumbent Hochul, who announced Adrienne Adams as her running mate for lieutenant governor.
