View this in browser ­ Donate Bi-weekly bulletin Issue 26/05 ­ welcome Dear Statewatcher, The myriad of ways states continue to exert their power is becoming increasingly unfathomable. They do so with little to no respect for international law, human rights or even humanity. The war on Iran is the latest horror with an unforgivable human cost. Whilst the why—embedded in racism, imperialism, and many global power structures—is an ongoing challenge which we all must meet, much of our day-to-day work at Statewatch is focused on the how. How, for example, the EU is pushing the deportations of individuals it deems unsuitable: by giving Frontex powers to force or coerce them out and blackmail countries into accepting them. Or, how governments are using digitalisation and artificial intelligence as a smokescreen to infringe on civil liberties, all in the name of progress and efficiency. By investigating and interrogating the how and using that to inform dissent, we can work to challenge states' actions. This exploration can take many forms: journalism, legal action, protest and even art.  At a time when people can so easily feel overwhelmed, we encourage all Statewatchers, colleagues, friends, and observers to look deeper and take action in any way they can.  Statewatch is here to support, encourage and inform, in any way that we can. As always, but not least in light of recent events, we extend our solidarity with the people of Iran, their families and friends, and all communities being subjected to horrific acts of state power.
