On Sunday, as we are about to close this newspaper, some very serious news arrives from Rome. Police have arrested 91 people who were intending to commemorate Sara Ardizzone and Alessandro Mercogliano. They had just placed flowers on a pole near the site where the two died ten days ago. Surrounded by a massive police force, they were loaded onto buses and taken to police headquarters. ---- Preventive detention was applied, a measure provided for by the recent security decree for those suspected of being dangerous during public demonstrations. Its application, however, should be based on concrete evidence (weapons, specific criminal history). In the previous days, the Rome police commissioner had banned the commemoration because it was "in conflict with the values of civil and democratic coexistence, given the ideological inclination of anarchism against the established order," as stated in the official statement.
The Prime Minister has taken responsibility for the operation and, speaking of the latest security decree, states: "It does not serve to limit the freedom to demonstrate, as some left-wingers claimed. On the contrary, it serves to ensure that demonstrations are conducted peacefully."
The facts themselves demonstrate the lies used by the authorities.
To guarantee the freedom to demonstrate, they stop people peacefully bringing flowers to a commemoration. The police headquarters claims that to defend the values of civil and democratic coexistence, any manifestation of anarchism must be prevented.
What is the police commissioner afraid of? Why does he not want protesters to approach the site where Sara Ardizzone and Alessandro Mercogliano tragically disappeared?
The authorities' lies affirm a profound truth: the governments of so-called democratic states are attempting to establish totalitarian regimes in which not only are the freedoms to express one's opinions limited, but any thought that does not conform to the values affirmed by the government is actually repressed. The government responds to its own failure with repression and authoritarianism. In 1922, the grandparents of many who now sit on the benches of the majority outlawed opposition, starting with the anarchist movement.
We must not retreat a single step to defend freedom, ours and everyone's.
