Co-created for International Children's Rights Day by the *Collectif Enfantiste*, the Observatory on Ordinary Educational Violence (*Observatoire de la violence éducative ordinaire*), the *Céleste d'espèces* research lab, the *Adultissime* project, and illustrator Mélanie Body, the "Maltraitomètre" is a tool designed to raise awareness about violence committed against children.
Primarily aimed at children and young people, the Maltraitomètre is inspired by the "Violentomètre" (a gauge for sexist and sexual violence)[1]and serves as a starting point for dialogue about violence. At a child's level
It features written descriptions of adult behaviors alongside illustrations and emotional expressions, allowing younger children to relate to the various situations depicted. The goal is also to foster an understanding of the importance of being respected, listened to, believed, and protected-and, more broadly, to show children what healthy relationship dynamics look like.

For instance, the point "The adult agrees to apologize" helps break the notion that adults are always right; it also-and above all-helps children understand that adults make mistakes and have a duty to apologize for them. Adopting respectful behavior toward young people also sets an example for how they should treat one another.
Educating adults
It is recommended that the Maltraitomètre be read in the presence of an adult. The authors provide a supplementary resource[2]aimed at adults (parents, educators, teachers, medical professionals, etc.). It highlights that "using a scale of intensity helps illustrate the concept of a continuum of violence" and that this scale "does not imply a ranking of the severity of the acts described."
Reading the "maltraitomètre" (abuse-o-meter) naturally elicits varied reactions from adults and prompts them to question their own practices. The goal is not to induce guilt, but rather to understand the emotions our behavior triggers in children and to reflect on how to create an environment better suited to their well-being and development.
Identifying violence
The "maltraitomètre" also serves as a tool for introducing children to the concept of consent and addressing sexual and domestic violence. Raising awareness of the dangers involved and challenging the normalization of such violence are essential steps toward encouraging open dialogue on these topics. While primarily designed for children, it is also a tool for adults to reflect on the kind of society we want to build and the place we accord the youngest among us.
Prevention: a crucial step
Opening up these discussions means taking a fresh look at how our society currently functions. Since the 2019 law banning the use of violence in parenting, little has actually changed. It is impossible to ignore the fact that the majority of violence against children is perpetrated by those closest to them (family, school environment, friends, etc.). The family circle is particularly insular, making it difficult to know what acts take place within the home. This is also why prevention tools represent a greater step forward than laws: the first step in combating systemic violence is always to listen to the needs of those who experience it. It is worth remembering that, even today, a child falls victim to sexual violence every three minutes, and a child is killed by their parents every five days. Training and education regarding this type of violence are an undeniable priority.

[1]Developed in 2009 by Martha Alicia, the "Violentomètre" (Violence Gauge) for sexist and sexual violence is a scale of behaviors designed to illustrate the continuum of sexist and sexual violence and to assess such violence within romantic relationships. Several versions have been created since its inception (e.g., a workplace gender-equality gauge, a racism gauge, etc.).
