The Oleshky ceasefire has come and gone – with some ups and downs.
Melania Trump said 800 were evacuated, but it’s unclear how many went to Russia and how many to Ukraine. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Lubinets, said there are lessons to be learned and hinted at a new agency to coordinate the future return of Ukrainians, while rejecting reports of Russian military buildup during the ceasefire.
More peculiar developments are also emerging in peace talks: China has reportedly rebuffed Putin’s trilateral proposal and urged European involvement, while Zelensky said he’s open to meeting Putin in Turkey but ruled out ceding Donbas and Crimea, after Putin’s aide claimed the Russian leader is willing to answer Zelensky's phone calls. Trump is also said to be eyeing Russian gas transit via Ukraine while Rubio pours cold water on peace before 2027… so there’s that.
And before the midterms, Trump is reportedly eyeing escalation in Iran if Republicans lose, while in Bulgaria, a Kremlin-friendly president was also elected, landing yet another blow to Kyiv’s diplomatic efforts.
