VOYCES FROM INSIDE and OUTSIDE MORIA:
An experiance of what „volunteer returns“ means
and about dreaming of Global rights and Borders wrong..
M. had bad luck: when he finnaly managed to go to Greece it was after
the 20.3. after the EU_Turkey deal!
He and the people travelling with him were lucky to arrive safe and
alive in Lesvos and be welcomed by rescue boats and not by NATO and
coast guard ones.
He also was lucky to meet the noborder kitchen and have the oportunity
to stay there and get informations about his situation.
He went to Moria to get registered.
In Moria he found out that for people from his country of origin
Algeria, no matter what the personnal reasons are, there was no
oportunity to ask for asylum.
He then got the information about volunteer returns as an only
alternative to asylum.
Being totaly desilusionned and scared about the idea of ending up in a
Turkisch prison, he decided himself to make a "voluntary" return.
BUT
This was not possible in Moria.
He was told that with his country there are no contracts for volunatry
returns and so they can not even issue him a paper to travel to Athens
to his embassy to return on his own costs.
The only thing they (IOM and Greek Police) could tell him is he has to
stay detained in Moria , get transported as a detainee with a boat to a
greek prison, stay in prison and then from there be deported to Turkey,
stay in Turkey in a prison and from there one day , get deported to his
home country.
Just count the costs of such a „unvoluntary travel“ and how many
institutions get money for each prisoner. Only the costs of Frontex
acompaying one to one (how much does this costs please?)..the prisons
the fery tickets, the cars, the police........ a hole industry.
Well our friend who could logicaly think, decided to try on his own. He
was actually forced by the authorities to take the most dangerous way.
He had to hide in a lorry in the port of Mitilini, to make the trip
since he was not allowed to make legaly and on his own costs,
Unfortunately he was cought together with another person before the
lorrie entered the ship to Pireus.
His friend had tried already many times, M. only this first one.
The police that cought them and dindnt treat them in a very polite way,
told his friend: if we catch you again we brake your legs, and to him :
you are not lucky .
We met him for the first time in Athens, after he had finnaly managed
to get out of Lesvos.
He went to the Embassy, got a laisser passer to return, payed a flight
and left, to return back where he had started with 18 years. At that
time hoping to make it for a new life in Europe, out of many reasons
that we dont want to write here.
Maybe one day he can travel as a succesfull man to a european country
and can tell his story , about the hopefuly no more valid border
closures of the European union.
And we or maybe only our grandchildren, sitting on the beaches of
Mitilini, looking at the lights of the turkisch cities, where no NATO
ships or Frontex ones will disturb the peacefull horizont, will remember
how long we dreamed and fought for this peacefull moment.
Make borders History!
