A week ago yesterday, police in the Italian city of Piacenza placed four leading
activists of the SI Cobas union under house arrest at dawn. Prosecutors haveaccused SI national coordinator Cobas Aldo Milani and members Mohamed Arafat,Carlo Pallavicini and Bruno Scagnelli of forming a criminal organization. FourUnione Sindicale de Base (USB) union activists were also placed under housearrest. ---- Specifically, it is about alleged bodily harm, resistance againstpublic officials and sabotage of a public service in the course of severalstrikes in the logistics industry. SI Cobas and USB are particularly wellrepresented there. Prosecutors allege that the unions conducted the strikes with"extortionate" intentions to secure better conditions for workers than thenational collective bargaining agreement.This claim is a farce. Unions are workers' means to improve their livingconditions - what else are they supposed to do? In truth, given the deepeningsocial crisis and the growing strength of militant unions, the Italian state istrying to make an example of eight workers.
