On the night of Wednesday, October 12, news came that broke all of our hearts
into a million pieces. Two people, Juraj Vankulic and Matúš Horváth, were shotdead in the Bratislava queer business Tepláren. Their lives were ripped from theembrace of the queer community in a space that was supposed to be safe. Butsafety is only an illusion until something changes about the place of queerpeople in society. ---- In the invitation to the event, which will have adecentralized character, i.e. will take place at the same time in several Czechand Moravian cities, it says: "Words cannot express the emotions that we feel notonly as queer people, but as human beings. Yet words, our voices, are ourgreatest weapon. Silence is no longer an option, silence is no longer a choice,because silence means death. Let's work together with people outside the queercommunity to get the Czech government, which is deliberately ignoring theubiquitous problem of discrimination and crimes against humanity, to act. Already on the morning of Thursday, October13, people in Prague came in front of the Slovak embassy to light candles by therainbow flag and honor the memory of Juraj and Matúš. A similar event was alsoheld in Brno in front of the Slovak consulate on the same day, Thursday. Severalhundred people arrived. Other events took place in Prague and Brno on Friday,October 14.Hundreds of candles were lit in front of the Tepláren bar itself. On Sunday,October 16, a demonstration "We stay in the streets / Anti-fascist march throughthe city" took place in Bratislava, which was co-organized by the platformsPovstanie continues and Bratislava bez nackov. In the event report from thePriama Akcia union, which also took part in it, it says: "Anger from oppression.This is how the protest could be briefly described, with which we remembered twopeople from the queer community murdered on October 12 in Bratislava, as well asthe systemic context of oppression. The strong expressions and overall energy ofthe protest - full of anger, anger, sorrow and humor - created an atmosphere thatwe have not experienced in Slovakia before. It was great to see that theorganizers decided not to do a media event to make themselves sound as good aspossible.
