 Ahmed Marzouki is a survivor of the infamous Tazmamart penal colony. He testified

in the early 2000s, on behalf of the survivors and the disappeared, of the horror
experienced. ---- In a post-independence Morocco, between a monarchy of ignominy
and bloodthirsty generals, the tyrants dance a macabre jig to the many innocent
victims. On July 10, 1971, senior Moroccan officers decided to carry out a putsch
in the palace of Hassan II. To the military students who left the barracks, the
officers did not say a word, except to mention a counter-terrorism operation. The
putsch fails, some of the senior officers are executed. A mock trial is
organized, Ahmed Marzouki is part of it. ---- A year later, another putsch, by
air this time, was organized against Hassan II. This one comes out unscathed,
again. A purge is made in the army up to the general and Minister of Defense of
the time.

Those whose innocence the regime knows are put in the prison of Tazmamart. They
number fifty-eight officers and non-commissioned officers. Narrow and stinking
dungeons as a room, the clothes will end up in tatters, winter and summer, on the
dirty skins of the luckiest, the survivors, twenty-eight in number. These will
see the light outside the place of death, eighteen years after the Calvary and
the ablations.

Ahmed Marzouki's pen is fluid and pleasant. She grabs and takes us by the guts to
gently guide us through the twists and turns of the convicts' experience. No
pathos in the story, reality is spit out as it is without pity, simply the daily
adaptation made of the laughter and tears of these walled-in people.

This book is a testimony to an era that many think is over, despite a despotic
regime still in predation. The conclusion of lucidity is left to Ahmaed Marzouki
who in a documentary dedicated to Tazmamart[1]says: "If[one]gives authority to
someone, even if[the]person is good[...]he can become satan
personified[because]power changes."
