But we were wrong. -- In the context of the war in Ukraine, under the guiseof referring to specific conditions and critical support, Wayne Price (and the AFthat published his text) are trying to introduce into anarchism (which weunderstand as a revolutionary movement and part of the general struggle of theproletariat against the dictatorship of capital) the main elements of bourgeoisideology, in direct conflict with the anarchist program for the liberation ofmankind. Note that this program does not follow from the text of this or thatanarchist theorist, but was formed in opposition to capitalism, in the struggleagainst it and as its negation.Anarchists for the nation?Who exactly is supported by the "anarchists" of the AF in Ukraine? Wayne Price istrying to convince us that we are talking about an "oppressed nation." He statesthat "anarchists reject nationalism, but not the goal of nationalself-determination (...), including the freedom of the people to choose whichpolitical system they want (for example, a democratic state, a centralized state,or no state at all[anarchy]) - and their freedom to decide, what economic systemthey want (state socialism, capitalism, libertarian socialism)."The fact that "anarchists" operate with the concept of nation is new for us! Sofar, we have assumed that anarchists oppose the nation and its materialconsequences, such as the nation state, national self-determination, nationalunity, and ultimately even war between nations. Revolutionary anarchists havealways taken anti-national positions, and not without reason. If we affirm thatsocial relations correspond to the stage of development of material productionand also produce principles, ideas and categories corresponding to these socialrelations, then it is clear that these ideas, these categories, are onlyhistorical and transient products that arise and disappear. Such an idea is alsothe nation, an artificially created formation, a historical product of thedevelopment of productive forces, which served the bourgeoisie for therealization of its revolution and for the establishment of its rule. And also inorder to attach the proletariat to his project, to divide it into nationalstates, to convince him that his interests coincide with the interests of thecapitalists of the same nationality, so that he could better manage themphysically and ideologically.The nation is an artificial union of the exploited and the exploiters. "People'sindependence, culture and national freedom" that Wayne Price speaks of is just aterritory in which the bourgeoisie can exploit us at will and make us believethat if we are driven to work by a slave owner who speaks our language, we itwould be more acceptable to work hard at him.The formation of the proletariat as a class is constantly undermined bycompetition between the proletarians as free and equal sellers of goods and laborpower. All ideological, political and military forces reinforce this atomizationon which social peace and the bourgeois order rest. The proletariat isdisintegrating into peoples, this is the bourgeois denial of the exploited as auniversal entity - as a class opposed to capital. And this denial ends in the endwith slaughter in the capitalist war.The creation and existence of nation-states has not eliminated the very essenceof the bourgeoisie-competition-which forces groups of the bourgeoisie to engagein violent confrontation with each other and confront each other at all levels inmatters of distribution of means of production and markets. Unity within thebourgeoisie (eg within the nation state, international treaties, etc.) isestablished to obtain the best possible conditions in a trade war (as well as aclass war). This unity can at any moment break up into various specific factionsthat will defend their interests in mutual conflicts.Therefore, any peace is only a phase of the upcoming war. On the other hand,every action of the proletariat, however partial, in which it acts for its ownsake and its own interests, contains the affirmation of the proletariat and itsstruggle for a general social revolution.That is why anarchism as a revolutionary movement from the very beginning opposesthe fatherland, the nation and the national struggle and seeks the destruction ofall borders and nations. Revolutionary anarchists do not support one nationagainst another, even if it is "weaker", "captured" and "oppressed". Therevolutionary anarchists are on the side of the proletariat on both sides of thefront.Coincidence of whose interests?The fact that some "anarchists" are fighting for the interests of the Ukrainianstate, Price explains by some temporary "coincidence of the interests of Westernimperialism and the Ukrainian people."If "anarchists" feel that their interests "temporarily" intersect with theinterests of the bourgeoisie, they should seriously consider what interests arereally at stake. In the case of Russia and the opposing Western powers, it isabout expanding the sphere of influence and maintaining the status of a bufferzone for Ukraine.As far as we know, anarchists, as part of the movement of our class, have alwaysbeen and remain interested in bringing about a social revolution. In theimplementation of the interests of the oppressed class, its liberation from theyoke of capitalism, the realization of the real community of mankind.So what is the convergence of interests?Just as it is not in the interests of the proletariat to build new factories (inwhich it will exchange its vital energy for dirt and sweat for meager wages,contributing not only to the enrichment of a particular capitalist owner, butabove all to the reproduction of all the social relations of capital that itenslave), it is not in his interest to protect national borders, the integrity ofthe territory, democracy or "human rights", which serve only as a framework forhis exploitation and an instrument of control.Wayne Price refers to the example of Friends of Durruti. But he did not at allunderstand their criticism of the united front. After all, the united front,which the Friends of Durruti criticized, is not only a single formalorganization, the participation of anarchists in the government or cooperationwith one party or another, but also an informal alliance, a single course ofstruggle for and in the name of the bourgeois program, a departure from theprogram of the proletariat and postponing it for a time "after the war", that is,just the above-mentioned unity of interests.Indeed, the Friends of Durruti did not demand the withdrawal of the anarchistsfrom the front, but this turned out to be a decisive mistake from a historicalpoint of view. While the proletarians of the Aragonese front thought that bytheir struggle they were defending the ongoing social revolution against thefascists, the democratic anti-fascist parties carried out the counter-revolutionin the rear. In other words, instead of freezing in the trenches and sufferingfrom a lack of supplies and ammunition, the anarchists of Spain had to go toBarcelona and Madrid to repulse the forces that, under the cover of a unitedanti-fascist front, were step by step restoring the dominance of capital. TheSpanish revolution was defeated both at the hands of the fascists, and precisely- and above all - at the hands of the democratic parties that prepared the groundfor them.Now there is no proletarian revolution in Ukraine, and the proletarians at thefront are dying, no doubt, only for the bourgeois state and its interests.Therefore, we cannot but repeat what many have pointed out before us. Theproletariat is not interested either in the defense of its state or in thestruggle for democracy. Neither democracy nor "our own state" is a more fertileground for class struggle-quite the contrary.The slogan of the Ukrainian proletariat is not "Glory to Ukraine" (a better, moredemocratic, socially just and in general one that cannot exist in the reality ofcapitalist relations), but "Not a single person from factories, not a singlepenny from wages!"What kind of solidarity?We can understand the capitalist world and its deep social contradictions onlythrough the prism of the proletarian struggle, which is and must beinternationalist. The proletariat, in whatever country and in whatever conditionsit may be, constitutes a single international class and, according to the logicof things, opposes the same enemy.The bourgeoisie and its ideologists (even if they beautifully call themselves"anarchists") deny the universal nature of the conditions for the struggle of theproletariat, emphasizing the peculiarities of this or that situation.The bourgeoisie is trying to impose on us the ground on which it can best defeatus. In other words, the bourgeoisie allows the proletariat to "forget" that itconstitutes the only general class, and imposes on it the most convenient fieldof confrontation for it. Thus, it can dictate the framework of the war to whichit directs us: the international united strength of the bourgeoisie against theisolated actions of our class, limited to one area or another. Bourgeois politicsfor the proletariat, social democratic politics keeps the proletariat of everycountry within its borders, turning the "internationalism" of our class intolevies, petitions, parliamentary inquiries and "solidarity" through banktransfers and supportive e-mails. This form of activity is not only completelyharmless to the bourgeoisie,Anarchists are not interested in this kind of "solidarity" with the proletarians(not the people) in Ukraine, but, on the contrary, in working together with themto promote the same struggle, the same interests, the same common strugglethroughout the world. To this false "solidarity" we oppose real solidarity, whichis the result of a common struggle.What to say in conclusion?Someone needs to tell Wayne Price that the positions he takes (not just about thewar in Ukraine) are not anarchist but liberal. And the Anarchist Federation mustdecide whether it should not remove the word "anarchist" from its name, as it iscompletely inconsistent with the positions it occupies.
