A historic line, existing for over 120 years, which spanned the entire
twentieth century. Starting from the third millennium, it sees a gradualdismantling, accelerated in the last few years. A subtle and nefariouspolitical will aimed at creating an increasingly growing disservice. In March2017, the stretch from Borgo to Nesima was inaugurated, with theexception of the Cibali metro station which was opened in July 2021.Already the idea of preferring underground routes rather than surfaceones (in the the 90s the railcar crossed Corso delle Province) gives anidea of how to live in the city. For sustainable mobility it isnecessary to take away space from cars, therefore keeping the paths onthe surface rather than burying them. But even more absurd is the ideaof bringing the extra-urban section underground up to Paternò. This hasalready happened along the S.M. Licodia-Biancavilla-Adrano. The route isunderground but does not serve as a metropolitan layout. The railcarscontinue to pass, but with very little frequency.2020 was the year in which, with the excuse of the pandemic, we beganwith the functional weakening of the railway line. There has been adrastic reduction in the Catania-Randazzo races: from 10 pairs of racesto 4-5. The railway section up to Adrano had up to about 15 pairs ofjourneys (now 6-7), while the trains to and from Paternò have beenhalved (currently 10). The trips are made increasingly by bus: the line,therefore, loses its essence already indicated by the name itself. It iscurious how the political class is so well prepared to grant contractsfor a useless work that will only lead to more concrete flows. It shouldbe remembered that on 30 June the final call for tenders which awardedthe contract to the company that will carry out the underground works ofthe extra-urban railway service from Misterbianco to Paternò expired.An absolutely useless procedure, as well as anti-ecological, for severalreasons. First of all, geographically Paternò is not part of the Cataniahinterland since, after Misterbianco, the continuity with the urbanfabric ends. You will lose a section on the surface of the surprisingscenic beauty. The risk is that the FCE will be reduced to a meretourist accessory along the Adrano-Riposto section, the only one thatwill remain intact. And then how can you think of carrying out such awork, when the supply of trains continues to decrease? The countriescrossed by the FCE will thus continue, inexorably, to go through aprocess of isolation from the Etna capital. Furthermore, the Circumetnearailway has stations at symmetrical distances, so the trains can crosseach other at a cadenced rhythm. But, since a lie repeated countlesstimes by the political class becomes the truth, by now the averagePaternese is convinced that with the "subway extension" he will be ableto reach the heart of Catania in 15 minutes. Lies carried out with theintention of concealing the real interests of capitalist and neoliberalspeculation that affect what has worked for entire generations. However,many inhabitants of Catania and its province understand more and morethe enormous joke that they want to implement.The Circumetnea railway, especially in the first decades, represented aturning point: the inhabitants of rural villages such as Bronte,Maletto, Randazzo then came out of isolation. Now this returns for a newform of economic backwardness. It is not the self-centered model thatmust be dismantled, but the alternatives to it. It is essential topander to the oil lobbies and the car industries. This clearly startsfrom the supranational level and then manifests its repercussions at thelocal level. Furthermore, for this to be possible, people must be led tobelieve that it is impossible to live without a car; an idea thereforethat must have an empirical confirmation. Several realities, such asSalvaiciclisti Catania, propose to extend the metro of the Etna capitalup to Monte Po (under construction); then divert to the airport passingthrough districts such as San Giorgio and Librino. Cars made by thePolish company Newag have been around since 2016 at the beginning of thefirst lockdown. The firm was supposed to sell another four cars toCircumetnea, but that didn't happen. Therefore the contract between thetwo parties was broken and the cars did not find maintenance. A storythat emerges last October, when the Polish journalist Emilia Derewienkowas on holiday in Catania and discovers the inactivity of the trainscoming from her country. An aspect that intrigues her, so much so thatshe writes an article on the case. So Circumetnea had to cover up thescandal, signing a contract with a company that carried out themaintenance of the Vulcano cars. Although they are back in circulation,this has not corresponded with the increase in pre-pandemic times; so itwas a simple sop for the commuters.The Circumetnea Railway is a single company, with trains, buses,underground. It decides how to use the funds to provide its services.Resources increasingly flow only to the metro, among other things in thewrong places. It is a firm political choice to promise work to"friendly" companies. It is not in the least interested in environmentaljustice through functioning means of transport, but only in makingspeculative deals.
