The small table of the Confederation of Education Workers (Ctera) called
a national teacher strike for June 22 in rejection of the repression inJujuy, in northern Argentina, and of what they considered "serioussituation for teachers and the Jujuy town". ---- Throughout the month ofJune, the teachers in the province of Jujuy carried out differentstrikes demanding a salary increase. The province registers one of thelowest teacher salaries in the Argentine region. According to data fromthe National Ministry of Education itself, we are talking about astarting salary of $87,074 per month. ---- Unfortunately, this data isnot surprising since we know that teacher salaries are always fallingthroughout the region. One Chicana that we have listened to over andover again, and even suffered from former president Cristina Kichner, isthat our work consists of only four hours. Teaching work is not finishedonly when class schedule is fulfilled. We take care of organizing andplanning, generating teaching material, printing this material (out ofpocket) and not counting the number of social situations that we cannotignore in our classroom. We work with people and we cannot advance incontent if the children suffer from hunger or some other violation thatwe must attend to. All this is not considered, it is ignored as if ourwork did not consider contemplating all these points.The forceful measures are promoted by the Association of ProvincialEducators (ADEP), which groups teachers of initial and primary level,and the Cedems, with a compliance of 90 to 95% throughout the province,according to sources in the sector. This measure began the week of June5 with massive marches in the main cities of the province, pots andpans, and staying on the side of the roads.Faced with this panorama, the Jujuy government formulated a proposalthat includes an initial salary of $179,000; the restructuring of thebasis for calculating the prize for assistance; the increase in thebonus non-remunerative additional; the granting of a non-remunerative,non-refundable supplement of $4,000 to teachers of up to 5 years ofseniority; and rule out the discount for the days of unemployment. Thissituation is hardly credible since while the massive torchlight marchwas taking place, the governor, in complicity with various politicalsectors, signed a constitutional reform that prohibited popularmobilization. The same game of power as always, the laws are just asocial democratic illusion that is rapidly fading.The governor then achieved a new Constitution and downward parities.This culminated in a savage repression in the vicinity of Purmamarca.There are no exact numbers of the people detained in the police stationsat that time. On Saturday, the provincial infantry attacked three timesagainst various sources of protest at the intersection of routes 9 and52. Around 6 in the morning, after a subzero early morning in thevicinity of Purmamarca, the rubber bullets and tear gas they tried todisperse the pickets of educators and indigenous representatives. Around4 in the afternoon, a new push by the uniformed men charged against thedemonstrators but did not achieve its goal either. As the sun went down,the detonations and clouds of smoke swirled without distinguishing men,women and minors.The protests against the partial reform of Jujuy's constitutional texttake place alongside mobilizations of teachers for better salaries andindigenous communities that protect their territories against lithiumextraction.
