On April 29, 2023, at the Monte Azul Full-time Rural Municipal School,
the 1st Seminar on Sustainable Development of Traditional Settlementsand Communities of Corumbá and Ladário took place. There was theparticipation of peasants, trade unionists, directors of associations,among others. The signed referrals respond to the difficulties ofproduction and access to education of peasants. ---- Marked by thePantanal biome, Corumbá is the largest municipality in the area of MatoGrosso do Sul and borders Bolivia and Paraguay. According to INCRA,Corumbá has 9 Federal Rural Settlements created mostly between 1983 and1993. Together, they have around 35,000 hectares and 1,245 families.Even with land conquered in the struggle, the peasants have a hard timeliving due to the lack of infrastructure for production and education,mainly. Meanwhile, agribusiness enjoys extensive state investment ininfrastructure for its soy, sugarcane, meat and eucalyptus production;largely for export.Still facing this inequality in order to live and produce food forthemselves and for the people, the peasants suffer from constantapprehensions of their commercial products, mainly cheese. Source: Capital of Paraná.The seminar began with a cultural presentation by students from thelocal rural school, bringing the dimension of the land into theeducational process and strengthening the bond with the territory.Afterwards, there were speeches by several organizations present. Thepresident of SIMTED, the Municipal Union of Workers in Education ofCorumbá, pointed out the importance of this training process effectivelycontributing to the direct action of the oppressed people.Cultural Presentation of the Corumbá Field School.Terra Liberta collection.Coming from Ceará, the Popular Organization Terra Liberta, affiliated toFOB, can be present through the invitation and articulation ofSIMTED-Corumbá. In his speech, the FOB militant shows solidarity withthe peasants:What motivates us to cross Brazil from the Caatinga to the Pantanal? Itis class solidarity. It is understanding that the pain of the familiesof the Nestor Makhno Occupation in Massapê, Ceará, has the same root asthe pain of the peasants here in Corumbá. And if the pain has the sameroot, our resistance against this oppression cannot have borders.The State that seizes the products of peasants here is the same Statethat is trying to expel Ceará's fishermen from their seas to installwind farms and sell energy to Europe. It's the same State that neverheld agribusiness responsible for the pandemic we've been through, butit has an iron hand against peasants!Militant of the Popular Organization Terra Liberta/FOBSIMTED Journal - CorumbáThe need to advance in the processing of products from peasantagriculture was highlighted by the director of the Union Section ofCorumbá of SINPAF - National Union of Agricultural Research andDevelopment Workers. This technical advance should come to favor thedifferent qualities of cheese, for example, that peasants produce. Thisin a context of a state like MS that has difficulty in food sovereignty,contrasting with the agribusiness empire.The settlers strongly denounced the State's restrictions against thesale of its products, as well as its failure to provide technicalassistance. Income from trade also plays a major role in keeping youngpeople who have strong emotional ties with their territory.The difficulty of continuously building an organizational process forthe class is something that has been demobilizing the people. "It's likea lamp that has run out of gas because it's already worked too hard", ishow one settler described these difficulties in the organization. Theorganizational challenges are tremendous and not by chance. It isprofitable for the bosses and governments that the people do notmobilize. That is why this seminar has a fundamental role in rekindlingthe flame of the lamp that is the people on the move. The seminarbecomes effective when it becomes part of a process.
