detention center in Medvelov, Slovakia. The Anarchist Federation joins

2023, 45 people detained in the Medvedov detention facility on the
Slovak-Hungarian border started a hunger strike. They are protesting
against degrading treatment, lack of information, isolation and
insufficient hygienic conditions. The group, consisting mostly of Iraqi
and Turkish Kurds and Afghans, has been detained in Medve'dovo for
several weeks without being told the reasons and duration of their
detention.

On the night of Wednesday, October 18, 30 police officers with dogs
arrived at the detention facility, trying to intimidate the fugitives
demanding their freedom.

Those detained are denied access to telephones, forced to wear prison
clothes and pay for all their meals.

Hygienic standards are low, infectious diseases spread easily in the
facility.

Detainees do not have access to interpreters, and legal and social
services are clearly inadequate.

"It's worse than what I experienced in Turkish prisons," says one of the
Kurds detained in Medved'ov. "We don't know on what legal basis they
locked us here and how long we will have to be here. We are completely
isolated here. The only way to draw attention to the situation is to go
on a hunger strike. We can't connect with anyone. The only way to get
attention to this situation is a hunger strike. We demand transfer to
open camps".

Security guards put up posters with the words "freedom" and "help us".
They are determined to continue to demand their rights and access to the
outside world through protests until they are given a solution.

We demand freedom for the people detained in the Medvedov detention
center and in other detention centers for people on the run. Migration
is not a crime and we condemn the use of detention as a response to it.
