This work retraces the history of anarchism in Spain from the end of the

19th century to the eve of the social revolution of 1936. ---- Bookchin
devoted a good part of his life to the search for truth about the
Spanish Civil War, its successes and the causes of its failure. With
this book, he returns to his notes accumulated over the years on the
subject of this "extraordinary anarchist movement". He wanted to restore
its letters of nobility as well as to anarcho-syndicalism, to
demonstrate that the Spanish anarchists adhered to a self-determined
social movement in which workers and peasants attempted to pursue a
revolution which would change the world.

To combat this false idea that Spanish anarchism was the disorganized
expression of an immature individual spirit of rebellion, devoid of any
reasoned thought, of any form of libertarian organization, Bookchin
returns to what he considers to be the roots even of this movement. It
was in October 1868 that the anti-authoritarian seed of anarchism was
sown by the Italian Giuseppe Fanelli with his conferences given in
Barcelona and Madrid. What followed was the development of the different
organizations and workers' unions, their audience, their struggles,
their demands, but also their dark years and the repression they
suffered. We can particularly highlight the revolt of Asturias. A book
to strongly recommend to any reader interested in worker and peasant
struggles, wishing to understand how this astonishing experience of
self-determination and demand for political and social autonomy came
about. A book of humanity! A book to discover for all those who would
like to open up to another imagination of anarchy, far from disorder and
terrorism.
