These social media platforms are used by bad actors and security forces to entrap LGBT people in MENA by using fake profiles and chats, subjecting them to online extortion, harassment, and outing in posts online.

In some cases, digital targeting leads to severe offline consequences such as harassment, detention, and torture. Rania Amdouni is one story of many in a Human Rights Watch report “All This Terror Because of a Photo,” published last year. Her Facebook and Instagram accounts were hacked multiple times, and she was subjected to threats of violence, including rape and death.
We all should be safe online. Over the next few months, we will provide you with some steps to tell Facebook and Instagram to act on user safety—and help secure social media from digital targeting.
