The European elections are over. Across Europe, conservative and
far-right parties achieved the high results predicted by the pollinginstitutes. Due in particular to the gains in France and Germany, the
far right now finds itself in a significantly strengthened position.
This allows the far right to either enter into a coalition with the
conservative EPP group (whose right wing it has long since strongly
influenced) or to act as a blocking force against any social and
progressive reforms. It does not take much imagination to picture the
extent to which future political decisions at the European level will
burden the working class and people with a migrant background.
This vote for the enemies of the working class and friends of big
capital - albeit in the face of minority abstention - is a clear warning
to our class. It is the direct result of ongoing austerity policies -
the destruction of public services, the erosion of our rights and in
particular the welfare state, while the wealth of the bourgeoisie grows
ad infinitum - and the liberalization policies promoted by the European
Union.
Even if the extreme right is far from seizing power across Europe, the
election results show more than clearly that, contrary to what its
advocates claim, bourgeois liberal democracy offers no protection
against the rise of the extreme right. Through its policy of
impoverishment against the working class and its divisive nationalist,
racist, sexist, homophobic and transphobic policies, it provides the
breeding ground for the rise of the extreme right. Through this
election, it is hoisting the extreme right into the position of power it
needs to implement its political plans.
We must recognize that we are facing a future of crises with potentially
the worst possible consequences. We must prepare ourselves for this. And
we must do it now. But if the vote for the extreme right is the result
of general desperation in the wake of constant attacks on and the
erosion of social policy achievements; if it is an expression of
structural racism, which breaks out unchecked in times of crisis; then
this vote is not inevitable either. Our class must unite to fight back.
In order to weaken the extreme right in the long term, we as the working
class must fight together to win back our rights. Only a strong,
autonomous, offensive and completely anti-racist social movement will be
able to permanently push back the extreme right.
In the face of systemic hatred and division, let us confront them with
class solidarity among all workers! This includes racialized people,
young people from proletarian neighborhoods, LGBTIQ people and women,
who would be the first victims of the extreme right if it came to power.
Wherever we encounter resistance from the far right, we must demonstrate
the social alternative we are fighting for. Our vision is not liberal
democracy, our vision is the united struggle for the interests of our
class, the building of counter-power and social revolution.
To build this alternative - in unions, neighborhood organizations,
school and college groups, and feminist, anti-racist and environmental
justice collectives - we must win our colleagues, our neighbors and our
fellow students over to our struggle.
Stop the rise of the far right!
Let's fight for social revolution!
