On Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., exceptional
broadcast of "Pas de Quartiers" at an hour that is no less exceptionalwith the historian Gérard Noiriel as guest for his latest work published
in the Gallimard tract collection (No. 55) and entitled: National
Preference, a history lesson for the use of contemporaries... ----
Gérard Noiriel's point is as follows: the "Asylum and Immigration" law,
voted on December 19, 2023 and partly censored by the Constitutional
Council, has placed a new controversy on "national preference" at the
center of the debate - and recalled that the majority of our fellow
citizens think that it is normal for those they elected to defend their
interests as a priority. ---- The "problem" of immigration has been a
problem since the beginning of the Third Republic and has resurfaced
every time our society has been in crisis. This concept, supported by
members of the left, has made its way into the political arena as well
as into society.
However, history shows that the headlong rush into an increasingly
repressive policy towards migrants, carried out in the name of "national
preference", endangers both the humanist values of our Republic and the
democratic principles of the rule of law.
After highlighting these lessons from history, Gérard Noiriel suggests
some ways to more effectively oppose the risk of xenophobic drift in
society.
