 Transfariana is the story of Jaison and Laura, a FARC fighter and a

trans sex worker, hence the title of the film: a fariana being a "female
guerrilla". The two fell in love in a Colombian prison where he and she
were incarcerated. ---- Transfariana does not aim to exoticize its
protagonists. This documentary, presented in Paris in 2023 as part of
the 29th edition of the Chéries-Chéris Festival dedicated to LGBTQI+
cinema. It offers us an extreme look and addresses the emancipatory
struggle within trans communities and sex workers who were discriminated
against in Colombia, particularly before the 2018 presidential elections.

Laura was sentenced to 60 years in prison, mainly for crimes she did not
commit. While incarcerated, she was transferred to a cell where she met
Jaison, a political prisoner and member of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia). Following their affair, Jaison was expelled from
the FARC.

Filmmaker Joris Lachaise follows Jaison after his release, using
archival footage from his prison stay and other footage from FARC
political rallies until the organization dissolved in 2017, after a
treaty was signed in Havana.

This story intersects with the rallies and struggles of trans women with
colorful clothing, big hair, and extravagant makeup, as they progress in
their struggles, from the brothels of Santa Fe to Petro's election
campaign in Bogota in 2018. The threats, the contempt during the
election campaign never stop.

Behind the Colombian landscape, Joris Lachaise raises several questions:
"How to build one's identity in today's heteropatriarchal world? What
elements, words and stories should we use to construct the notion of
"self"? How can an emancipatory struggle be built including among sex
workers, drag queens, trans people and within a gerilla?".
